Warren are the new leaders after some high quality golf and no shortage of surprises in last weekend's South Devon League programme. The Dawlish club triumphed at home to Dainton Park by four and a half points to two and a half, while defending champions Torquay were being put to the sword at Teignmouth. Stover consolidated in third place when they overcame visiting Churston 4?/2? after a remarkable opening game that saw Stover's Tony Stanton post a gross 66 in his pairing with Dave Henson yet still finish up losing after veteran Tom Holland and Churston team captain Derrick Piper squeezed home 1-up on the 18th. Holland grossed 69, while Piper included five birdies and two bogeys in a peaks and troughs round of 70. Teignmouth, bottom of the table before Saturday, sounded a reminder to Torquay what a tough job they face retaining the shield for a fourth time when the Haldon Moor club romped away with it 5-2.
More than anything, the Petitor side were undone by the conditions after four days of solid sunshine that turned Haldon Moor into a fiery course with firm and fast greens. It proved more than Torquay could handle, while Teign- mouth looked totally at home. Warren were aware they needed a good result to maintain their shield challenge, and didn't disappoint.
