What excellent news that the facade of Harrison's Amusements is to be renovated/modernised. I completely agree with David Force that for a long time now it's been an eyesore, so hopefully the council will give it the green light when they consider the plans in August. Together with the expected £1.5million facelift for the Strand, things are continuing to look up for the town.
Agreed. Harrison's is prominently on view to anyone driving through Dawlish. For people who don't know Dawlish, it acts, unfortunately, as a "shop window" for the town as a whole and gives an impression, to me at least, of seaside tackiness.
But it's not going to vanish. It's going to get BIGGER and that terrrible orange fascia isn't going. Do look at the plans and see that they want to build a permanent enclosure right out to the edge of pavement.
Are the plans on-line anywhere, thanks? I can't believe that they want to keep that awful orange frontage!
that enclosure is their property anyway, and from a safety angle has to be good, stop young children in danger of being run over when parents fail in their duty to watch said siblings.
I've had a look at the plans and I can understand why some people might find it difficult to interpret what they are going to do with the existing orange facade. My interpretation is that it's going to be hidden by iron grey trespa cladding, to help make it more in keeping with the Conservation Area. The enclosure is definitely not going to extend onto the pavement.
DM, With Harrison's and Bailey's side by side along there, the idea of a "Conservation Area" seems pretty meaningless to me. Conservation would involve insisting that they keep the existing facade. Don
I would have thought that being in a conservation area, it should have ment the frontage being returned to resemble some form of elegant Victorian building, not degrading it into an even bigger looking tacky hovel for the shorts, sandles and tattoo brigade or the 'on benefits' crowd to waste both their time and money in. It could be re-vamped to provide Dawlish with a far better looking first impression than it unfortunately gives at the moment. Another lost chance by the council/planning apps.
Whats council/planners got to do with it. So you'd rather they left it as it is looking run down , with a huge crappy orange sign, remaining in the 1970's look that it has at the moment. As for the money wasting place for tourists.Vegas and Blackpool didnt do bad out of it .Its a seaside amusement arcade, its what most coastal towns visited by tourists have. Are you saying that the pier at teignmouth should be knocked down. Its a place that tourists pop into for a short time, on a visit for a game of bingo, play a game etc.Its a place to have fun.lightern up Not only that but it employs a number of local people.
Blimey! Where did I say I wanted it to shut it down? All I remarked was that as its in a conservation area, it would be nice if it was made to look more like the original victorian type building RATHER than a tacky seaside amusements. Jesus, if some people actualy bothered to read what was wrote, rather than just reading what they want to see, there would be less flaming on this site.
