The Environment Agency was alerted by a Neighbourhood Watch volunteer at Shutterton, Dawlish who spotted sewage discharging from an overflow. The resident checked the discharge and noticed it had a foul smell.
Samples were taken by and Environment Officer and South West Water were taken to court for causing pollution and pleaded guilty.
The Environment Officer claimed that this was another example of South West Water failing to manage its assets, and it was particularly disappointing that the water company had to be informed before it became aware of the problem.
The Environment Agency has a free 24 hour hotline for reporting pollution. The number is 0800 80 70 60.
