what realy gets me about dawlish is the shops copying each other, as soon as one shop gets something new in all the other shops copy, can they not come up with their own ideas or is it too easy just to copy. take for instance home and garden i have used them ever since they opened about 4 years ago and when they moved down to peirmount place i thought great we finaly have a decent shop with a variety of stock and who also go beyond their means to help their customers, but on the very same day they moved that davidsons toy shop, now known as bits and bobs, decided to completly rip them off and sell practicaly everything they sell, why could they not sell something else, we need alot of other things in dawlish. in there defense i have heard that they were gonna go bust and had to change what they sell but why copy someone else and risk putting them out of business, businesses should be helping each other out in a small town like dawlish, not stabbing each other in the back.

I used to own a shop many years ago and back then the shops used to help each other out but lately it just seems that most people are only out for themselves and that's a shame.

They are trying to fill the void that was left when Woolies shut down. People dont realise what a great service Woolies provided to this town.

I wouldnt bother opening a shop again and I just dont see why anyone would! You know the saying 'only the strong survive', in recent years Barclays Bank, HSBC, Woolworths and Threshers, all big names have left Dawlish, so 'well done' to the small retailers for hanging in. I can see the problem and difficulty though, if you want to have a change and move on and sell your premesis.

Trying to fill the void, no, they don't sell anything different to everybody else, so how are they filling any void. And I know for a fact they are copying other shops because most nights you can see the woman that works in there looking through the windows of several shops on her way home to see what they are selling. What a joke, I'm surprised the shop owners havnt had a go at her for it.

so what you are saying is there should be no competition ! Costcutters are in competition with One-Stop and Co-op dont hear nobody complaining from them. If you open a shop you always have to face the fact that somebody else will open up selling the same, get over it

yeah but come on co-op and costcutters make a fortune and they have hundreds of shops. the little shops rely on being original and cannot afford to get ripped off. yeah okay shops copy one or two things but not every single thing like she does.

as i said get over it, a bit paranoid when you are only a customer, as you say, methinks you are the owner lol

So customers can't have an opinion lol, as I have said I am not the owner but used to have my own in Dawlish so I know how hard it is to make a living.

There's a real danger for all of the low price merchants because they are going to be the hardest hit by a supermarket. Does anyone remember John Lord presenting the 'yellow book' proposals at the Shaftesbury Theatre, when he told us that Dawlish needs to broaden its appeal and for shops to become more specialised or move up-market to avoid direct competition with Tesco or Sainsbury? It's a really serious point and sadly the people who get attracted to open shops in Dawlish all seem to do it on minimal budgets and with no special line of trade to offer. We will not attract visitors out of season to sample the delights of Dawlish if all they can buy are cheap lines in washing up brushes. To be fair there are some business people trying to raise the game and they are slowly making an impact, but others need to take note.

Couldnt agree more, all we have here is really discount shops all in competition with each other, charity shops and estate agents. Presents is great with their variety also Emotions. How about some specialist clothing shops offering something unigue with extensive size range, Teignmouth manage to do this !!!

If all the Estate Agents and Charity shops closed, ..who would take their place? Teignmouth is different to Dawlish.
