This town is in a rut, everytime something is proposed the nimbys come out. We cannot keep protesting about change, Save the Manor ! Why? No to Tescos ! Tourist land will be lost Where? More was going to be built to compensate, the land lost was for touring not static. Sainsburys is further away from the town which goes against the recomendations. New houses ! No more green land taken away infrastructures not in place (but when they are built do you think that will not happen) where are the local families going to live? The town centre is dying without any outside influence maybe the new Chamber of Trade can put some ideas forward on how to rejuvenate the town, but you can bet your bottom dollar somebody will start a campaign against any proposal. NIMBYS Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I think the main problem is that you can't please all of the people all of the time. Maybe if things were done more openly and honestly and the up and down sides considered in a reasonable, non confrontational manner, people would accept the need for change. IMO, unless you yourself make the effort to find out what's going on, things just appear to have been decided without peoples knowledge and consent. In this age of internet, there's no reason that proposals can't be put forward in their very early stages to gauge public opinion right from the outset. Does Dawlish Town Council have a website? If so, I haven't found it yet. If the real reasons for change are explained in simple terms to the general public, most accept and understand. It is only when they are left in ignorance and presented with 'fait accompli' that protestations start. Yes, you will always get some who protest no matter what, but with clear and transparent explanations, this number is likely to be fewer.

If you want to be involved in Dawlish don't expect it to come voluntarily from the Town Council. Some of us have asked to be involved in drawing up the brief for a 'feasibility study' which the Town Council wants to run on whether to keep the Manor House. We think it ought to start with the (hardly ever publicised) Parish Strategy which intended to build 'New Municipal Offices' (wot! like Exeter City Centre?)in 2007. But the Town Clerk's document comes forward to Wednesday's Town Council without any community discussion and seems solely concerned with the running costs of the Manor House. There's not a word about 34 Park Road and now they have bought it they don't know what to do with it.

what realy gets me about dawlish is the shops copying each other, as soon as one shop gets something new in all the other shops copy, can they not come up with their own ideas or is it too easy just to copy. take for instance home and garden i have used them ever since they opened about 4 years ago and when they moved down to peirmount place i thought great we finaly have a decent shop with a variety of stock and who also go beyond their means to help their customers, but on the very same day they moved that davidsons toy shop, now known as bits and bobs, decided to completly rip them off and sell practicaly everything they sell, why could they not sell something else, we need alot of other things in dawlish. in there defense i have heard that they were gonna go bust and had to change what they sell but why copy someone else and risk putting them out of business, businesses should be helping each other out in a small town like dawlish, not stabbing each other in the back.

I see that the planning application regarding this property has now been withdrawn. I dont think that anybody would object to change within our town, if it was done with full public consultation and it truly was for the better of the town. Unfortunately not everyone either has access to the internet to view the Dawlish.gov website or may have the time to trawl through all the various proposals. Take for instance the revamped High Street, now the road has been narrowed, as soon as somebody decides to double park outside any property there, the road is as good as blocked, as we found out yesterday. Great thought from Devon County Council whos number one interest it would seem would be to stem the flow of traffic anywhere and turn it into pathetic crawl, whos great road safety idea was to fill in bus stops so that now buses have to stop in the middle of the roads and actualy bring traffic to a halt. Is it any wonder change is feared when overpaid idiots come up with hair brained schemes such as this!? Dawlish is a great little town that has a lot to offer, if it is done and handled correctly. The lawn is an asset, its a great focal point for the town ( it would be even better if the drug taking alcholics where moved on from the stone huts so that they can urinate/swear/shout elswhere without families having to view it all during the days) just look at Carnival week and the crowds that assemble there, how great was it a few years ago when the Party in the park concert was held there? The town does have good assets, its just getting those in power to use them to their full potential.

No. You have it wrong on the High Street. It was a pitted and badly repaired channel that traffic drove down far too fast for the people trying to walk along pavements barely as wide as your shoulders. Now the services have been renewed to keep things going for another 50 years, the kerbs have been moved to allow reasonable pavement widths, and crossing points for the increasing number of those who have electric buggies to keep them mobile. AND, the new road surface will do far less damage to suspensions and visitors may even be impressed with the smarter appearance of the town. So, parking wardens, get out and slap tickets on anyone parking and keep the traffic moving.

I so wish wardens would book cars that sit all day and night on footpaths, I thought footpaths were people and roads for cars, maybe phone in a few car registrations or take some pics would that work?

Go for it. These selfish pigs deserve all the punishment they get (or should get).

@wondering i don't think it will work, sadly. i've actually already approached the appropriate authorities on this matter, stressing the fact that a lot of illegally parked vehicles are obstructing traffic flow, often forcing traffic on to the wrong side of the road while approaching or going around corners, and often within a few minutes walk of one of two inexpensive car park. they made noises about tackling the problem, but nothing happened. you'd think the additional revenue alone would be sufficient incentive to the council, even if they're not interested in the safety aspects of it. however, i'm sure if enough people – and the right people – make enough noise, something may get done about it. it's election time, and i know from experience that councillors and mps are rather more inclined to offer support to this sort of thing when they're angling for votes.

Yes .. good point to mentiom when they call for your vote! If you believe the refuse truck will not get through and so your road not ckeared, tell Teidnmouth DC and they will tell the Police to sort it.
