Staff at Sefton Hall in Plantation Terrace called an ambulance shortly after 4.10pm on Sunday after finding the woman severely injured on the ground outside. She was later declared dead at the scene.

Police think she may have fallen from an open window on the nursing home's third floor.

A Devon and Cornwall police spokesman said: "Scene of crime officers and CID officers did attend and believe the woman may have fallen from an open window on the third floor above her.

"No other people are believed to have been involved and we are not treating the circumstances as suspicious."

The coroner has been informed and an inquest will be held at a date to be fixed.
