To open a shop like that, the seller will have to have a lot of money to start the business. Apart from you, how many others will use it? It is NOT a financially viable business in this town. The Investigator has spoken.

So, is anything financially viable in this town?

Something that will make money. With Woolies gone, the town has suffered greatly. Why dont you open your games shop in woolies?

Why has it become MY games shop? I'm not sure I like your tone to be quite honest.

Why do you use the word Obnoxious in describing me? I suggest you take a look at the way password has treated me. Also, if you cant take what you dish out, then shut up and get out. Now, crawl back under your stone.

Happy New Year to all my lost Forum chummies......oh how I've missed this on my travels, but I'm back from Australia for a while (wasn't able to get onto forum due to the nature of my work in OZ). Whilst not being able to prove this is Fell699 the obnoxious comments from the investigator do seem remarkably similar in portrayal of all of us lower life forms compared to the "man who has spoken" and wishes us all to return back under our stones!! The point about the shop was a great idea, where do we get our Xbox stuff from locally these days, a valid suggestion thrown back in an obnoxious way in my humble opinion, I guess an opinion that doesn't matter to the might and power of "THEEEEEE INVESTIGATOOOOOOOR" So in response to my comment I'm going to crawl back into the rubble by The Brunswick and wait to be told how worthless I am!! Toodaloo for now

Yes. Toodlepip old chap. Must go up the 'Lanny' now, for a lot of beer and excellent conversation while watching the football. ps. Is this forum some sort of private club for BoF's? Sure seems like it. And just for my good friend Dave. The Investigator HAS Spoken.

@ The Investigator Just been to the Lanny as it's too cold under my stone...were you drinking a Babycham and muttering on about the mighty Seasiders being able to turnover Man Utd? This isn't a private forum or we couldn't all be on it unless by invitation or Royal Appointment, but what about the shop idea? I'd like to see Dawlish regenerated and many more locals shops for local people, but alas I do not have the cash to invest in a long lease on Woolies or any retail experience to make it happen. If I can get some cash could you lend me a hand on the tills for a shift on a Saturday, I won't open on a Sunday, I like ot sit and read the papers on a Sunday now I'm home again. Tally ho old bean, wot wot wot

The original poster has asked a very valid question - personally I believe the answer to it, and to other questions, would be found if we could somehow persuade Argos to come to town.

I was thinking the same. The investigator does appear to share some characteristics with FEL-699.

People are complaining about the lack of trade in Dawlish. However, on an earlier post there was also a mention of Argos coming to town which was met with various replies regarding what low life Argos customers are and how we don't want that in the town??????????? What on earth do people want? For fear of being shot down, I am all in favour of Tesco/Sainsbury's whatever. People are getting tired of not being able to get what they need here anymore. Anyhow, suggestions appear to be somewhat pointless!

Password - you say that "People are getting tired of not being able to get what they need here anymore". However I notice that you didn't provide any of the 30+ replies to my "What Does Dawlish Need" thread, so I would be genuinely interested in reading what goods/services it is that you think we are lacking (other than computer games). Thanks.

Argos would be a great idea. At the moment anyone who needs to buy electrical goods has the choice of one shop. The result of that is they go elsewhere. Then one thing i was very dissappointed with was the farmers market. What a load of crap. Some fudge, a foreign food stall, turkeys and a clothes stall. Where was the hot pork stall, fresh veg, homemade cakes, bread ,preserves, sausages. the number of visitors were non existant due to the poor choice. One visit and you'd never go again. I'd be suprised if it lasted until the summer.

I dont think people want anything at all. Why would Argos open in Dawlish when they have stores at Newton, Exeter and Torquay? Business people know that locals travel out, get away, regardless what is here, there is no gain for them to opem in Dawlish. This forum shows the town in a very poor light and does the town no favours at all, certainly does not encourage anyone to open a business.. ask yourself would you? if yes.. good luck then.

This forum shows the town to be what it is, very dull with a few shops struggling to survive so much so that they have to charge more than neighbouring towns, even Stokes put 10p a pound on their sprouts Christmas Eve and took it off their first day open after Christmas. The new shop in the strand charging £1.50p for six fat balls for the birds, the same ones in Teignmouth £1 for six and if in Newton Abbott 2 packs of six for £1.50p. I certainly wouldn't even think about opening a shop in Dawlish until the parking is made easier also something drastic is done to the ridiculous layout of the strand!!!!!!!!! I expect i have ruffled a few feathers but that's my opinion, feel free to disagree!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dawlish Man, I apologise for not posting on your thread. My goodness me, I definitely wouldn't open a shop in this town. I get the feeling some people are a little over defensive on here ?? I don't think i shall bother anymore. Thanks to everyone else anyhow. Goodnight.

I'm sorry Password, but you're confusing defensiveness with wanting to hear constructive criticism instead of some of the sweeping and often unjustly damaging generalisations about our town that are often posted on here. This is a good forum, for which I thank the webmaster, but I wish that there weren't so many on here whose agenda is purely to do our town a disservice. Can I repeat my well-intended question to you in my posting which you for some reason took offence to? "I would be genuinely interested in reading what goods/services it is that you think we are lacking (other than computer games). Thanks."

@PJD Have you ever thought about how much you spend in petrol by running your daughter to and from NA to get her shopping? Your carbon footprint also? Do you complain about the price of fuel for you vehicle? Have you been to the Strand shops and compared not just the price of food, but more important, the quality? As for shopping at Tesco in NA, how much does your daughter waste out of her weekly or whatever shop over there? Doesnt she, like many others, buy things that they dont really need and end up throwing it away because it has passed its sell/use by date. So before you, or anyone, drives to Tesco or wherever in future, think how much it will cost you in petrol against how much money you will save(?)if any, by not shopping locally. Sorry, I forgot your tin of cat food that you buy, which really helps the local economy.

you are wrong i buy everything i want locally, as ive said before, my daughter has a large family and cannot get everything she wants locally at a price she can afford, and its asda not tescos where she shops, and without getting into a row over carbon footprint ---------------rubbish biggest con going, global warming just an excuse to get more money out of us hardworking taxpayers!!!!!!!!

Investigator , i find myself agreeing with you. If it costs between £5-10 in petrol /wear and tear on car for each trip, then the difference in prices probably makes Dawlish cheaper to shop at.

its also about choice and variety, coop, costcutters stokes lloyd maunder ryders provides it for me and my partner but unfortunately not for my daughtr and her children, what we have in dawlish is convenience stores not discount shopping, ive had this argument with her and she tried it one week and kept a record her shopping bill came between £30-£40 more, so i had to give in to the argument,im sure there are many other people with children will agree with her, that is why we need tesco/sainsburys here. i know of several pensioners that go to n/abbot to weekly shop as they say their pension goes further, we cant speak for everybody just because we dont see the need to go outside dawlish. its about freedom of choice

J.Warrener

Cant blame the pensioners, with free bus travel and loads of time on there hands(ha Ha) then i can understand them. £30-40 pounds difference, it must be a big family. No seriously that is a big difference for just food or are you including other items. When you consider that most thing cost a few pence more locally and alot of Veg is actually cheaper locally.

Smokey

that includes everything for a family of six for the week, if you have never been to one of these supermarkets especially asda i suggest you go and check it out for yourself. as i said shopping locally is ok for me but not everybody.
