Hi all, just a few obsevations as someone who has been here for only 7 months. This is a lovely part of the country and the coast here is spectacular. I split my time between Dawlish and Durham. Dawlish is a small but nice town and most of the locals seem friendly. The town is very clean and even on the weekends I have stayed is not too noisy or troublesome. If you want to see lively and loud then try any of my local towns in Durham, nice and quiet here. There are some problems, not much parking available and over enthusiastic traffic wardens. The cost of living is very high and even the budget shops are expensive. The ferret and radiator is very lively and this often spills out onto the street(I live near this pub). But this is a town you should be proud of and one that I enjoy living in.

Well said Robotman. I love Dawlish. It's not perfect but nowhere is - however I wish the moaning minnies on here (granted that they're vocal but very tiny minority) would appreciate what they have and offer constructive advice to improve upon it, rather than being armchair/keyboard warriors. I'm pleased you've been made to feel welcome by the locals.

I've also just moved to the area. It's a beautiful little town and surrounded by some fantastic places. I've noticed a few people complaining on here and expecting the council to pay up and rectify it all. Shouldn't we be chipping in ourselves to keep this place looking the way we want it. On that note, does anyone know of any organisations or groups out there that deal with these kind of things.

Recently moved here and find Dawlish charming, clean and friendly.Moved down from RAF Lyneham and find the area a fresh change of pace, totally relaxed and most people willing to give a friendly nod first thing in the morning while strolling the beach with my wife! The town centre with it's flowing brook really sets for a pleasant stroll around the shops with a surprising ammount of cafes and a few nice pubs that suit us perfectly. Don't think I've walked up and down so many hills in a short distance before but now taken it all in my stride! As I love guitars would be nice to meet like minded musicians in the area for jams etc as I have a pub prepared to let me start an informal relaxed weekly session!

I've only recently moved here too, and I think it's really nice for the most part. The town is looking a little shabby, especially down by the railway station and sea front but, as people have commented on the regeneration thread, most of it's nothing that a bit of paint and a clean up wouldn't fix. The lawn's great, and it's really nice to be able to pop out and buy most groceries in local stores. By far the biggest problem, in my view, is traffic and car parking. I know few people around here think the parking enforcement chaps are bit overzealous but, on the other hand, there are often scores of illegally parked cars up Queen St. and thereabouts which seems to get overlooked. Some sort of residents' parking scheme would help, and firm but fair discouragement for the folks that think they have a God given right to dump their car wherever they like. Oh, and to Dave, I play guitar too, so any sort of jam night would definitely be of interest.

Dawlish is a fantastic town. We should be proud of it. Yes it has its faults but they are minor compared to elsewhere. The people are friendly and welcoming to new comers. It has a beautiful town centre , with the river running through itand great caricture. One thing that is annoying though and it is only minor, those pesky pigeons on the front under the platform. Maybe a bird of prey could be brought in to deter them. BE PROUD OF DAWLISH

Just come back from a walk around the town and to pick up a few things. The town its self was very busy but a lot of the shops were closed which surprised me.

There will be even more shops closed when the Spawn of the Devil, Tesco, opens its unwanted store. Tumbleweed drifting down the Strand.A ghost town.

Investigator i think you misunderstood, the shops that were closed were normally trading, that's why i was surprised they were closed as i thought they were struggling to survive!!

LOL. I know what you meant as I was down there also, and about the same time, but I was just comparing it to the apocalypse that will be happening soon. And yes, I too was surprised at the amount of shops closed.

Went to teignmouth boxing day to watch the swim. I couldnt believe how many shops and cafes were closed.Even the pier was shut. Thousands of people in the Town, yet nothing open. Then went to shaldon for the three legged fancy dress race. What a difference , all shops cafes and pubs open and heaving. What a bonus for the town buisnesses, to keep them ticking over in the winter months. Pubs and cafe's were so full they were spilling out on to the streets. How about Dawlish doing something over the xmas /new year period . Look at exmouth Xmas morning.Thousands turn up to watch the swim. Well done to The Terrace , Ugly Duckling, Taylors and the others that opened over xmas. You seemed to take good advantage of the extra people in the town. As for the others, you obviously dont need the trade.

What did you think of Costcutters being open on Christmas Day?

The Investigator

Although a shame for the staff, but possibly a good thing for those who are alone as it will get them out and talk to someone, and for people who cannot afford to buy in bulk.

this is what is wrong with todays world, is it necessary to open all hours, if you work in retail you have no xmas break, if shops are open people will shop. years ago xmas was a 3day break and you were lucky if you had a fridge let alone a freezer HOW DID WE MANAGE restore the old values and lets all have a xmas break. By the way they will all be open tomorrow HAPPY NEW YEAR

31 Dec 2009 09:54

@PJD. Again you are blinkered. Are people in retail the only ones who work on Christmas day? Medical staff, emergency services, airline industry, transport services, coastguards and millions of others worldwide working on Christmas day.

I agree PJ, its a 'want' society, nobody has standards, kids out on the street late, family breakdowns. Clubs and pubs being open to the early hours with Tesco open all night selling booze. If it was when time was called at 1030-11 and shops closed, all would go home and get up early and go to work!! I know a family where a son aged 24 walks in most nights after clubbing at 4.30am and distrurbs the family asleep, questioned about it will say... 'because I can'. I was alone Christmas day but did not go to Costcutters for retail theropy!!! Investegator wants Dawlish back as it used to be ...yet wants shops open 24/7 and everything, it does not add up. I suggest he opens a shop then he will see where the trade comes from, remember though you will not be allowed a holiday or any days off at all.

The Investigator

31 Dec 2009 11:25

@wondering. when did i say i want shops open 24/7??? when have i said about wanting pubs open all day? how do you know that if i had a shop i will not let anyone have a day off or a holiday? are you that stupid? so what is exactly wrong with costcutters being open a few hours on christmas morning? supposing a nurse from rd&e came home after working a 14 hour shift and wanted something quick!!! at least she could then buy it. i suggest you get your facts right before making accusations.

investigator what did the nurse or any of the other workers that are in a profesion where there services are required on xmas day do in the days gone by that i talk of? remember we even closed on Sundays and had a half day in the week, we planned in advance, not panicbuy like now. also we attached more time to family values and christian beliefs then. Im tempted to try this in 2010 " Im a Christian and Sunday is my Holy Day, Christmas Day is the only Son of my Gods birthday and i want to celebrate it

The Investigator

31 Dec 2009 13:48

@PJD You cant blame the government for that. Its Religious freaks like you, who want to control everyone. You want to dictate to everyone in how they should live their lives. What they can or cant do. Religious people are the worse in the world. Dangerous and frightening. What is their answer/excuse for everything??? 'It is what the Lord wanted'. The cause of many wars and deaths. So crawl back under your stone and leave your right wing religious views out of it.

Going down the shops? I hope you wont need the emergency services, because people in your world shouldnt be working.

what a twisted mind you have just like your words, there are certain people that are dedicated to their proffesions and it is accepted that has always been, that they will provide their services 24/7, but in other walks of life not necessary. because of the way life has become i have to work 364 days of the year on minimum wage like many others,(and yes i hve worked today as i did Boxing Day) my original point was is it necessary to open retail outlets 24/7 363days of the year remember large establishments have to close Easter Sunday, (sorry to say to you a Holy Day)but allowed to open Good Friday, i and i expect a few others will remember when everything closed on Good Friday. but this will all be lost on you, my original point about not working on sundays because of my religious beliefs is because it gets afforded to other religions that excist in this country because we are now multicultural, and i consider myself a practising Christian because of the way i am to other people, its not all about going to Church
