hello! this is just a plea from your local traders......i know times are hard and people are struggling but your local traders are too! i know that people think we don't always stock things you may need but in really simple terms there won't be a high street in dawlish in the next few years if people don't support what we've got now! we have got a butchers, a bakers, card shops, 2 delis, cafes, newsagents, gift shops....lots of independant people who are just trying to make a living. just think about it. its really down to you as customers - if you want this town to become even more of a ghost town with only estate agents and charity shops, then keep spending your pennies in big branded supermarkets in other towns. or if you want us to survive these really hard times then please, just pop in to town and buy something!!!

I do,but i still think we need some well known national chains to come in and revitalise the town. i agree with what you say,but the majority with young families will still shop at asda etc.if we had say Iceland move into he old Woolworths it might help. Also as ive said before an Argos might help to bring people from the area into the town which would help the local traders

The roadworks are presently causing the town to be paralysed. A lot of people are bypassing the centre of Dawlish & going elsewhere for shopping as it is so much trouble to negotiate round them. I've never seen the Brunswick & the Strand as empty as they've been for the past 2 days.

So where are the people living in Dawlish? ..its them not visitors the origianl post refers to. Things must be tough I see the Lansdown where towns money seems to go, has a food sign in the road 3 ft off the kerb! If they stopped the football and made it a 'pleasant pub' they may get more money on food, but guess place suits Dawlish standards.

Traders need to be more cautions about the quality of the product they sell, quite often the meat and fruit and veg on sale is poor quality and has not been selected but just ordered and delivered from wholesalers leaving the seller trying to sell poor quality products, shoppers are not stupid, they will pay more than supermarket prices for quality but not for inferior goods. Reject poor produce, make your suppliers aware you will not re-sell rubbish and they will not palm you off with it and your customers will not shop at supermarkets who do have control quality.

Is a well known fact you pay more in Supermarkets for veg, I was in Asda and did the 'lazy' shopper thing had a jacket potato, heck on the till slip it said 48p, normally in Stokes Dawlish its 29p and you can pick any size or weight... Apples are cheaper too! I dont see how you can single out 'Laud Mauners' they are farmers! Did anyone see the Channel 4 programme where Tesco relabelled the out of 'date' sticker, move the date forward to sell the meat rather than dump it? So supermarkets are not whiter than white! It's the same old story if its in Dawlish, dont go to it. I really expect people not to go to the Tesco or Sainsburys if they ever do open, they will dislike it for some reason, staff or summit lol. People have already said on here they will still go to Newton Abbot. The store will trade from Starcross/Exeter west and holiday people.

we should surport locals shops as these are the shops that surport local people in jobs etc, what really gets to me is that some people think if u own a shop in the town ur loaded that is so untrue i work in a local shop and if one person steals 1 mars bar that the profit for a whole box gone.and when adsda or tesco sells there stuff so cheap is because the bulk buy and half the time the stuff is sat in dark rooms trying t keep it fresh which it isnt look after ur local shops or we gonna have a town full of what nothing is this what we want i dont think so

I wish you luck! I had a shop in the town a few years ago. Never had any local support untill the day I had a closing down sale! I tried everything but very few locals came in. The big names wont come to Dawlish as its too often refered to as a dying town. the best hope we have is to support unique independant traders in a similar way as they do in Totnes. The people of Dawlish will be the first ones moaning when more and more shops dissapear but I have to say this, it will be partly due to their lack of support when, (not if), more shops close down. Maybe Dawlish can then become the charity shop capital of Devon.

I for one support our local butchers, bakers etc when I can, but find it frustrating that our council or who ever it is, have not realised that even locals object to the parking fees. There is no way I can walk back from town with heavy shopping....so I use the car...I can not, with the best will in the world afford to get all my groceries in town and so I buy the bits I can then go to the supermarket. If I come into town on a Saturday and am unable to park....the supermarket gets the trade. I work all week..so Saturday is it...however much I want to support our town...sometimes it just isn't easy.

It was really good to see the new discount store open next to Dawlish News, but one thing I do know because I have had a shop 'you have to be open all hours'. Here we are 10 days from Christmas and at 3.30 this afternoon and children due out of school, the shop with various Christmas stock is closed! By all means close after Christmas but not before! (Now then Jacky I am not moaning! you would agree surely you need to be open dont you?)

Where are the Christmas trees this year? The Christmas street market on Sunday was a great boost for Dawlish but even that lacked the usual mulled wine and mince pies. Dawlish is looking very dull and unkempt which is a shame for those few who are trying really hard.

i was dissapointed with the street market too many market traders not enough of the local traders from previous years, and who decide to put a trader slling xmas wreaths between chris taylors and stokes.

Well "Mexico", what an inspiring couple of posts you;ve left on your first visit to the dawlish.com forums. Can we not have a section on here for the whiners, and leave those of us who care about our town to discuss Dawlish in a constructive manner?

i respect your opinions and your right to air them, but other people have theirs too. when i voice my opinion its not "moaning" as you put it but to provoke a reaction, i love dawlish but everything is not as seen through rose tinted glasses. you tell me i should support dawlish town as its our club, but the way i see it is there are 3 football clubs in this town dawlish, united and langdon, all representing dawlish so local people have a choice of their own. different people hve views on the town but it doesnt mean they are moaning. freedom to think and speak as you wish

I was referring to the first two posts that "Mexico" posted since taking the trouble to register on this website. Your posts are, in my humble opinion, quite interesting. This person made a conscious effort to register on here purely to post a single sentence whinge. I'm all for constructive criticism - hence my support for the recenetly revealed regeneration plan - but what's the point of people just posting inane crap such as "That's Dawlish for you."?

@PJD. Who the hell wants an Argos? We already have enough chavs and chavettes here, and all these wonderful hardworking single mums, so that if there was an Argos here, we will be infested with more of them. Dont let Tescos etc ruin this town. And as for any traders reading, you can help by lowering your prices. The Investigator has spoken. I will be exposing all the wrongdoings of this council and town on my website for all to see.

any new shops surely must be welcome to revitalize what is fast becoming a ghost town

@PJD I agree, but IN TOWN, not on the outskirts, because that is where the spawn of the devil (Tescos) will build their monument to greed, and the destruction of town centres. Let us fight for good shops in the Strand, not Gargantuan structures out of town. The Investigator has spoken.

we all have our opinions but we do need a large spermarket to STOP people going out of town and maybe bring others into town, we have to progress and i am not young nor an old fuddy duddy, but it will happen

28 Dec 2009 18:47

@PJD. Because a major supermarket will be built OUT OF TOWN, how will that make people come INTO town? They will have NO REASON to come into town. Cant you understand that Large out of town supermarkets are the cause of town centre decay? If I shopped at Tesco when its built, I will drive home, and have NO reason to go down the strand to shop. So what happens? The strand becomes a ghost street, as no one will be shopping there.

but people drive out of dwlish now and never go down the town, ask around, stand outside asda or tescos and see how many people there are from dawlish. i shop 99% of the time in dawlish and see the same people all with families grown up mainly, the rest jump in their cars or catch the free bus, others catch the train or bus to teignmouth.

@PJD And they will do it even more when the devils own store opens up OUT OF TOWN. Nearer than NA, and so more people will be going to it. For goodness sake, open your eyes and think about it. That will be the end of Dawlish, and YOU, and people like you will be to blame. The Investigator has said his last word on this, because you are blinkered. The 'Death of Dawlish' is your fault.

If Dawlish did not have the sea and the holiday trade, The Strand would have little business, it certainly would not survive on local trade alone... Dawlish looks so sad in winter. As I have said before locals will not use the out of town Supermarket as it is a general shopping policy, it will be mainly used by those on holiday or from a wider catchment. Many posted here that they would not go to the new store right at the start of discussions but did choose. Tesco will no doubt win, I cant see why people think they are so cheap, clever marketing 'every lttt;e helps' lol.
