I have seen a fair few conspiracy theories lately and it's easy to see why and how someone would choose to "disappear"...

I strongly suspect that Roy was in on it from the beginning, what with VoRGate. It may be worth keeping your eyes open in case he is in hiding at Roy's safe house in Dawlish.
