There appears to be an awlful lot spin and rubbish talked about in that article - good ole Devon County Council.
The land was free so what sort of building is it going to be for 3 million quid???????????????????

Why start a new thread? Oh, because you love the sound of your own voice.

Rather than just bandying your opinion around as if it were fact, can you please explain what bits of the article it is that you describe as "rubbish".

I know of a few people living in that area are concerned about the proposed youth/training centre some are already trying to sell their houses.

Roy

Out of genuine interest, why are they concerned?

Viaduct

How many yoof centers have there been in dawlish over the years and why have they been shut down?
I agree with ZIGGY, the fact that there is resentment by many living in close proximity to the site and I believe camplaints are documented when planning permission was sought, but like so many other things we hear from councillors who claim that there was full consultation, everybody was in favour and that is why it is going ahead, is rubbish.
But my point if you care to examine what I said, was more about the cost and not so much about the spin.
You (Roy) avoided any comment on the cost - I wonder why?

Viaduct asked: what sort of building is it going to be for £3m?

A bloody good one that will provide many great benefits for our town. Our thanks go to the various bodies that have worked hard to secure the funding from a multitude of sources.

Can you honestly say if you were looking to buy property on an estate or around the Sandy Lane area having the Youth/Training centre on your doorstep wouldn't deter you? It certainly would me.

Roy
Roy
06 Jul 2009 16:45

It would be no more a deterrent to me than if it were, for example, a Police Station being built there.

Now that would be a good idea.

I hear moans all the time about high council tax/income tax, but in reality it is not moaning, everyone likes to pay it and they will pay whetever is asked of them. Those same people must think that paying 3m for what is not much more than two semi detached houses is value for money. Time will tell.

teignmouth police have been looking fr somewhere to go for years, they lease it backfrom the developer at the moment, just think how much that costs, what could be better than to build a station along with the youth/trainig centre, they will need a car park tho. lol

I have heard that the football club is loosing money, (lack of support). Someone told me they haven't got anything that resembles a football team. Maybe they should give up the lease for the ground, and let it for some other yoofful purpose.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

This article in the Express & Echo shows that you two shouldn't believe everything that you're told:

New manager Jeff Evans has wasted no time in stamping his mark on Dawlish Town, announcing two big signings to bolster his side ahead of the new Toolstation Premier season.

Goalkeeper Steve Johns and defensive midfielder Aaron Harper-Penman both played for Evans during his time at Barnstaple Town a few years ago.

They spent last season playing for ambitious village side Witheridge in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League Premier Division.

The pair have been training at Sandy Lane since Evans was appointed as boss a fortnight ago, and have now put pen to paper for the Seasiders.

The manager reiterated his intention to make only minor changes, and explained: "As I said before, they've finished second, third and fourth, so I don't need to go out and bring in eight or nine new players.

"Ninety per cent of last year's squad have now signed on, so it's just a case of tweaking certain areas rather than changing them."

The capture of experienced stopper Johns is particularly encouraging for Dawlish, as the goalkeeping position caused them a few headaches last season.

Ryan Draper left early in the season, Kenny Griffiths' stay was only temporary, and Martin Horsell was dogged by a knee ligament injury.

Reserve team keeper Jason Kinsman deputised well but the arrival of Johns – he also represented Devon under Evans – means competition for places for the No.1 jersey.

Harper-Penman, meanwhile, is a versatile midfielder who can also play in defence if needed.

The former Exeter City trainee came through the youth system at Barnstaple and went on to captain the side before being snapped up by then-Falmouth Town manager Steve Massey.

Young attacking midfielder Matt Anderson has also signed for the Seasiders, and Evans says he is in talks with another defender over a possible move.

His first chance to see his new side in action will be next Friday night, July 17, when Belgian side RRFC Montegnee – they are visiting the South West for the Errea Tournament in North Devon – visit Sandy Lane (7.30pm).

A home game with Bridgwater Town follows on Tuesday, July 21 (7.30pm) before Dawlish travel to Cullompton Rangers on Saturday, July 25 (3pm).

"We've arranged three friendlies at the moment, and ideally I will be looking for a couple more before the season starts," added Evans.

I thought I had read it Roy baby! It said,"New manager Jeff Evans has wasted no time in stamping his mark on Dawlish Town, announcing two big signings to bolster his side ahead of the new Toolstation Premier season."
And I said,"?????????????."
I do not watch football and would certainly not watch DAFC, I was merely passing on a comment from someone who has tried to give them support and could clearly see no point in giving a so called team his support any longer.

Two new signings. To add to the 90% of last season's squad that have re-signed. That, to me, makes a team.

Out of interest, why does PJD no longer support the Seasiders?

Smokey

Do you Roy or have you ever,? are there any local people that still support them ?

Roy

09 Jul 2009 10:28

I do PJD, but what I don't know is what makes you think that locals don't support the Seasiders. Last season, Dawlish Town had the 9th highest average home attendance in the Western League.

Something has obviously cracked off in the past to make you not go along any more, but I'm not aware of what that is. Would be genuinely interested to know though.

Smokey

average is a tot up of all games played at sandy lane and then divided, when several games are called off in the area, genuine football fans will go anywere to watch a game, as you very rarely lose your pitch to the weather you pick those fans up, but that does not mean they supprt dawlish. ive been told most weeks you are lucky to have 45 for western lge. i am not prepared to go into on a forum, why i no longer support them, but wish them good luck for the coming season, as i also do all the local teams. i am a football fan and cant wait for the season to start

did you watch the 2 friendlies roy, and whatwere they like ?

Roy

22 Jul 2009 20:11

I thought the Seasider's did really well against the touring Belgian professional side, only to lose to a well dodgy late penno. A couple of the new signings seem to have massively strengthened the side, and we should have scored more than the 1. It finished 1-2 by the way.

Last night though, the clinical finishing that was the only difference between the two sides on Saturday, was back on show at Sandy Lane as the mighty Lish comfortably beat Bridgwater 3-1. Don't forget that Bridgwater are in the league above! And you won't see a much better goal this coming season than the 25-yarder for the third goal.

I feel that an exciting season is ahead of us and that the people of Dawlish will continue to have a team to be proud of. I know that pre-season games often count for nothing, however I believe that promotion is a real possibility, if only the ground could be brought up to the necessary grading.

Should Dawlish Town gain promotion into the Southern League, Sandy Lane will need to be upgraded to a Grade D standard by 31st March of the following year. Should it not be, the club would be immediately relegated.

Would you like me to provide a link to the relevant F.A. document that describes what's necessary in order to fulfil the Grade D requirements? Or are you just taking the piss?

Haven't we been here before? If I remember rightly Tesco wanted to build a store on the football pitch and have a stadium etc built somewhere at the back of the town.
At their expense.

The Football is fine where it is, accessible on foot etc. just need to spend some money on bringing it up to date, maybe that would attract more supporters, as for Southern Lge !!!!!!!!!!!!

Roy
Roy
23 Jul 2009 12:14

A lot of the work that would be needed to get Sandy Lane up to scratch for the Southern League is actually more technical than aesthetic.

Should promotion be achieved on the pitch at the end of this coming season, then the club have just under a year from then to get everything in order. If the grading is achieved, then the club would have to drop back into the Western League.

Smokey
Smokey
23 Jul 2009 15:29
