Can anyone provide some insight as to how these scams take shape?

Thanks

Yes. Every month or so there is a meeting between estate agents and local builders and they talk about which properties are coming up. They are interested, obviously, in character properties, particularly if they need a bit of work. Then its put on the market and as soon as someone rings up 'its sold' - 'someone was in the office when the details came in'. It happened to me too many times and was confirmed by a friend who has lived in Dawlish for a number of years.

Its a corrupt little town!!!

Yes I see.

I can imagine that there is a 'ring' whereby the builders collaborate to keep prices low and don't gazump each other.

Daresay there is a kickback in it for the estate agent.

I've been quoted an estimate by a local estate agent to place a land plot on their sale books - their suggested price seems unbelievably high. Like, twice what I was envisaging.
