Police are also investigating the accident at Holcombe Cross near Dawlish in which a man died.

The fatal accident happened at 5.20pm on Saturday as a silver Fiat Cinquecento was in a collision with a bus. Another car was also involved in the crash.

The 37-year-old man from Newton Abbot was confirmed as deceased at midday on Sunday. His 44-year-old, male passenger was taken to Exeter Hospital for treatment to a suspected broken arm.

The deceased man's family have been informed but the coroner has not formally identified the body.

Police, fire service and ambulance crews rushed to the scene of the accident and watch manager David Williams of Dawlish fire station said: "There was an incident between two cars and a bus and we sent two appliances to the scene, one from Teignmouth and one from Dawlish.

"There was a fatality at the scene, and the passenger was taken to hospital, the case is being investigated by police. We were able to remove the injured people from the car with the use of small cutting tools and there were no serious injuries to people travelling on the bus."

Commander Williams said his fire crew were there for one and a half hours and the roads were closed for two to three hours while police carried out their investigations.

PC David Salsbury explained how traffic around the village of Holcombe Lane quickly became gridlocked. He said: "We received our call at 5.24pm. By 5.35pm the roads were blocked and we immediately asked for road closures to allow us to carry out our enquiries to determine the nature of the incident. By 1.03am Sunday the roads were re-opened."
