I am a university student, orginally from Dawlish and I am currently writing my final year project on the effects of CCTV on the local community in Dawlish. I would really appreciate any comments or opinions on the subject from the local community, all of which will remain anonymous. I will also be putting a letter in the local paper requesting the same information from the local people. I am open to any opinions or comments, positive or negative. Thanks.
It just makes me want to don a hoodie and smash stuff up.
The council spending £80K on cctv just goes to show what they think of us.
007, I agree, they spent all that money on the wrong cameras which do not work at night, they record 24 hours a day but as our local constable complained they are sometimes left looking at Keep Left signs and are only monitored in Newton Abbot rarely, the one opposite the COOP can read you put your pin numbers into the ATM, that is from an independant report, the Council used false figues. The true figure of people who wanted them was 16 out of 1000 that is from the survey they conducted which I have. The money could have been better spent somewhere else.
I have just seen the latest crime figures for Dawlish and they are UP not Down. ~Who will pay for the new Inra Red Cameras?
Sorry I forgot to mention previously that using the FOI I asked how many criminals had been caught and prosecuted using CCTV evidence since CCTV inception. Guess what NOT ONE

Is there any chance I could get a copy of the report you talk of? I have tried to get copies of the public consultation that the town council did but noone can seem to locate it to give me a copy. I can pass on details of my address if you are happy to give me a contact e-mail address which I could send my address to. It could help my project in a huge way. Thank you for your response.
Interesting that Drugs User 4549 has directed you to the "Dawlish Rural" ward (i.e. not the town itself) - presumably because it shows an increase in reported crime, and therefore suits the personal agenda of Drugs User 4549.
However, he doesn't direct you to the "Dawlish" ward (wherein lie the CCTV cameras), which shows a 13.8% decrease in reported crime in Dawlish itself.
Thanks for the link - it's good to see that reported crime is down in Dawlish.
Sam, I have sent you the 18 page Independent CCTV Report which you will find critises just about everything. as I mentioned to you in the email I asked a Cllr if the recommendations had taken place and was told it had been "put on the back burner"
No doubt the idiot Roy will have some comment, but he only talks Wibble.
The Strand looks terrible. Can't somebody do something? Perhaps we should just build houses there when Sainsburys comes.
Hi there, I think CCTV in a small community such as Dawlish is a fantastic idea. If we take into consideration that the community is predominantly elderly, it can be be a really useful tool for assuring that people are protected. It is also extremely valuable as there is a lot of vandalism and anti-social behaviour in Dawlish, therefore it provides sound evidence which can be used to bring these delinquents to justice!
Whilst CCTV can be a good thing, here in Dawlish it was and is a waste of tax payers money. The Council did not ask the right questions of the suppliers and were sold the wrong cameras which do not work at night, do not pan automatically. They do record 24 hours a day but are monitored by Newton Abbot control centre occasionally, and when the operators go home -I have seen letters from the Police- they are sometimes left pointing at and recording keep left signs. Why havent the council taken the suppliers to task, which by the way is Sound & Vision, Cockwood. With respect can you tell me how many crimes have been detected and prosecuted, the answer is NONE.
Pity you have your head in the clouds, ask our local Police Officer, have you seen the independent report which you can get from the town hall, you will find it will open your eyes to the truth
