Trying to support local trade this Christmas, my wife and I decided we would purchase our poultry for Christmas from LLOYD MAUNDER in The Strand. We decided to pre-order a medium chicken and went to hand over our hard earned cash on Christmas Eve.
I was absolutely gob-smacked to find out that the butcher behind the counter charged my wife £19(yes that is correct NINETEEN QUID).
Is it no wonder the locals travel out of town for their shopping when they get ripped off by the local shops. I am not saying all local businessmen are the same, but LLOYD MAUNDER is not helping their cause. I can't wait for Sainsbury to open, to give a bit of competition to the town!!!
Do people prefer a chicken thats had freedom to walk around outside or one thats never seen daylight and been battery feed, that is what you get in supermarkets .. bargain hey?
Wondering,
I agree with all you have said.
However, £19 does still seem a lot unless it was a very big "chicken" or a mistake. £9 I could understand.
Brightspark,
What weight was the chicken and did your wife check the price?
Don
I have to say, I wasn't particularly impressed when we went to pick up our pre-ordered turkey breast roll, my husband had ordered it and asked specifically for one that would cost £10 as we are a 2 adult, 2 young children family and did not want to be eating turkey for the next week, not a problem, the guy behind the counter said, it will be ready on the 23rd. When we went to collect it, we were told that it was slightly over at £15.
I did not want to argue about it in the shop and handed over the cash but will probably buy my meat (free range organic) from Tesco in future as I pass it everyday on my way to work.
You may pay more for your chicken if it's had a so called happy life with the freedom to roam around outside, but at the end of it's life it will still be hung up by it's legs, hit over the head and then have it's throat cut!!!!
