Work is starting in Dawlish on an extension to a footpath in the town centre.

The footway extension will form a link alongside Dawlish Water at Brunswick Place, which was originally very narrow and difficult to navigate.

The work forms part of a regeneration project for the town centre, supported by Teignbridge Council.

It has put £200,000 worth of funding to the scheme over three years.

Work on the existing path was completed in May 2007 and Teignbridge has now designed the final extension to the footway.

Work is planned for autumn 2008 and Devon County Council has agreed to adopt the footpath when it's completed.

The county authority has also offered £10,000 towards the £45,000 construction cost.

Dawlish Town Council and Dawlish Community Trust are also involved in the regeneration work and came up with a 'wish list' for areas which needed improving.

Dawlish mayor Cllr Wally Protheroe said: "The new footpath will improve the quality of life along Brunswick Place for residents, businesses and visitors, and will help facilitate short term parking in this area."

What about the quality of life for Dawlish residents who will have to contend with drug addicts/alcoholics in their town passing on their habits to their children, because of Cllr Protheroe's sanctioning of the multi-use Youth Centre?

How strange that he and other Councillor's do not address big issues such as this in our local press; prefering instead to prattle on about Rotary business while posing for supercilious photographs.
