Crime has dramatically plunged in Teignbridge.
Over the last three years, offences have dropped by a massive 20 per cent.
In 2003-2004, 4,769 crimes were recorded, but in the past 12 months the figure was down to 3,728, smashing a government target.
But the local police chief, Superintendent Richard Baker, stressed that it did not mean officers were content to rest on their laurels.
"Each and every crime committed has an effect, and we will continue to work partnership to bring crime, and the fear of crime, down even further," he said.
The Home Office gave Teignbridge a target to reduce crime by 15 per cent and the challenge was co-ordinated by a community safety team.
In the last year, the initiative has included obtaining anti-social behaviour orders against seven people, installing a youth shelter to help address anti-social behaviour in a Newton Abbot park, and implementing a six-month Section 30 dispersal order in Teignmouth.
Campaigns have also been run, aimed at raising awareness of crime and offering advice to residents.
Supt Baker added: "We work closely with many agencies in South Devon to help deter crime and reduce the fear of crime, and it is good to see such strong results.
"Crime is not simply about numbers and targets, it has a very real effect on people's lives, and I am delighted to see we are succeeding in our work."
And Cllr Brian Berman, Teignbridge executive spokesman for communities and regulation, described the figures as a testament to the hard work put in by organisations throughout the district to help tackle crime and its causes.
He said: "We benefit from living in a very safe area and, through its crime reduction work, the council has helped to make the area even safer for residents and visitors.
"It is the continuous behind the scenes work which is really bringing crime down."
Over the three-year period, the authority has also created a community environment warden service, which ensures a uniformed presence across the district.
Teignbridge also operates an award-winning CCTV system designed to help ensure even safer streets.
Last year it was responsible for more than 500 arrests and the recovery of nearly £60,000 worth of goods.
Another initiative is aimed at targeting the small number of offenders who commit a large percentage of crime. It has reduced repeat offending.
Torbay just missed its target of a 17.5 per cent reduction by 1.2 per cent. But it still meant that offences in the Bay were down from 8,136 three years ago, to 6,811 this year.
Supt Chris Singer said he was heartened the figures reflected success in tackling the types of crime which distressed people most.

The CCTV system looks like it's going to pay for itself many times over. In financial terms and in terms of making citizens and visitors both feel safe and be safe.
Like Joey says, good news for the citizens of Dawlish and another reason for us to be happy citizens.
Sorry ' The Truth ' I have to disagree with regard to Dawlish, as you know they dont work at night they are seldom manned in Newton Abbot, they can read your PIN numbers and Tuck's Plot camera can see into the rooms of property. and a quote from Devon and Cornwall Constabulary 'There have been occasions when Teignbridge Control Room Staff have closed and cameras have been left, for example, looking at a keep left bollard, as opposed to the street in which the bollard was located' I have a copy of the orginal letter
Metropolitan police: CCTV is a complete waste of money. Figures show - that only 3% of covictions are attributable to CCTV.
Dawlish Town Council took the people of Dawlish for a ride. They said, and it is recorded in the minutes, "We do not have enough crime to justify CCTV". So what did they do? they justified it by claiming there is a fear of crime. And how did they do that? They claimed that after consultation with the people of Dawlish, there was an overwhelming majority that wanted CCTV. Well that majority, (which is on record) was all of 16, funny how there are 16 councilors. They had a consultation among themselves and voted in favour of it themselves, thats the way to get a majority. It is called, "Totalitarian Democracy".
And to you jokers on here, you wait until your next council tax bill drops through the letter box, you will then begin to realise that we are not joking when we are trying to highlight what your crap councilors are up too.
They will happily spend your money, and if they haven't got enough, they will happily put the precept up.
CCTV needs upgrading to be effective, now who is going to pay for that? Not your crappy councilors, that's for sure.
Neither of you has acknowledged that the fact that crime rates are down is GOOD news for the citizens of Dawlish, and its visitors.
Why is that, I wonder?
Interesting that Viaduct has twice written "your councillors"......
Crime rates are down - FACT.
It's a FACT that crime rates have dropped by a huge amount in Teignbridge.
It's a FACT that CCTV has helped to contribute towards this FANTASTIC news.
No candyfloss (what a perverse choice of word!), just FACTS.
And my god how that must hurt those people who throw wild and libelous allegations around like confetti, but are unable to provide a single jot of evidence to back up their fantasies.
CRIME IS DOWN IN TEIGNBRIDGE!
Those who care about Dawlish will rejoice in this news. The fact that certain people are unable to publicly admit that this is great news, proves that they care not one iota about OUR town.
chicken shed and his accusations again.....
You promote saccharine and twee stories to enhance your charity money collecting.....anything you deem negative you trample on to protect your vested interests.
What about the facts from User 4549?
1. I am not Chicken Shed.
2. I did not make any accusations.
3. I don't collect for charity.
4. I have no vested interests.
5. Your buddy didn't present any facts.
You're not very good at dealing with facts, are you? You avoid facts and only peddle wild and often libelous twaddle.
Why won't you say that it's good news that the crime rate is down in Teignbridge? Something that is a FACT, rather than a figment of a deluded paranoid imagination.
Balls on the table time again Dullish. Do you think the FACT that the crime rate has plunged is good news for the citizens of Dawlish or not?
The establishment always doctor figures. Are you that simple that you believe everything the authorities tell you?
It will be good/great news when Dawlish is eventually rid of corrupt Councillors/Rotarians/Roundtablers. Do you agree?
IF there are corrupt councillors, rotarians, roundtablers, etc, etc, etc, then yes it would be great news if evidence was produced and they were exposed and run out of town.
I'll ask you again (with your deflections, are you sure you're not a politician yourself, or more likely a failed politician) - do you think that the FACT that crime rates are down in Teignbridge is good news for the citizens of Dawlish?
And quit with the personal abuse.
Crime figures maybe down in Newton Abbot, when I get a reply from D & C Constabulary, as I have requested the figures for Dawlish under the FOI, I will post here. Perhaps you ought to read my first posting and try and understand it. the camera left pointing at a bollard how great is that. Some of the glass coverings are so dirty they cannot see a thing. (In the Report).
Perhaps I should have mentioned that they call it Teignbridge and mean Newton Abbot, no mention of Dawlish
So now you're making up your own definition of 'Teignbridge'! Good grief!
I deal in facts, not the machinations of one person's vivid but paranoid imagination.
And still Dullish can't bring himself to type that it's good news for the citizens of Dawlish that the crime rate is down. Why is that I wonder?
It is a shame you cannot handle the truth, where did it mention Dawlish? I have spoken to the Police and they agree there has been no change WHATSOEVER in Dawlish, Yes in Newton Abbot and Yes in Teignmouth.
I would also add, that unless you know what the crime level was to start with, how can anyone say it was down?
Crime level to start with? It's in the original article:
In 2003-2004, 4,769 crimes were recorded, but in the past 12 months the figure was down to 3,728, smashing a government target.
Good news must really hurt you.
Facts are presented, and you still cannot acknowledge The Truth. Why is that?
Dawlish is part of Teignbridge! Another fact that you conspiracy theorists / Dawlish haters seem to let pass you by.....
You spoke to the police did you? Of course you did, love.
Please tell us which police officer (their number will suffice), and tell us what the figures are for Dawlish itself.
FACTS please, not lies.
Dawlish is part of Teignbridge! Another fact that you conspiracy theorists / Dawlish haters seem to let pass you by.....
You arrogant SOB you couldnt handle the truth if it smacked you in the face. I have already posted 'When I receive confirmation by letter from my request for the figures I will post it here.
Speaking for myself I dont not hate Dawlish another of your wild assumptions.
Whatever you say, Dullish.
So who was this policeman you claim you spoke to? Or was that another lie?
You make youself look more and more of a fool, I know who Dullish is and it aint me, and there is only one PC in dawlish, since they installed the cameras and moved the other one out to pastures new.
This chap makes a good point, pasted from the letters section of the E & E.
REGARDING the story Figures show big drop in city crime as tough targets are surpassed, Echo, August 23 — strange how difficult it is to report a minor crime now.
A massive fall? So I would expect not to see cars with their windows smashed, criminal damage and anti-social behaviour, such as cycling on pavements, etc.
These figures are based on reported crimes surely.
Most people, after a "we will get back to you" response and they don't, prefer not to waste their time reporting minor crimes any more.
I am sorry, I would believe the insurance industry's statistics on car crime in preference to these.
David O'Brien
Manipulation of figures, disfiguring the facts, misleading statements, are practiced all the time by those in authority. Something that Joey Deacon, the truth and a few others are attempting to hide - all of the time!
OMG, I have just realized the JD has gone to sleep, please tip toe around and don,t wake him please.
Did you ever receive that confirmation letter that you claim to have requested and said you were going to share with us on here? after all, it's been a whole week now........
If you knew anything about the law, which you obviously do not, Public Authorities have 20 working days to reply. If they do not comply the Information Commissioner is informed and then instructs them to release the figures requested.
Once again you are totally wrong, I have stated before I think I know who Dullish is, but it is not ME
