Did anyone see Nigel Kennedy's performances at the Proms on the BBC? Absolutely amazing. It certainly put into perspective the dreadful dross that was on BBC 1 and ITV 1 ( choir and karaoke rubbish....more of the Britain's got talent/X-Factor dumbing down ).

Hopefully this will kick-start a renaissance of real talent and dispose of the 'holiday camp' tripe that has polluted our airwaves in recent years.

Saw this as well. It was breathtaking and awe inspiring. Elgar never sounded so good with Kennedy's possessed playing. Nigel Kennedy is one of the greatest musicians this country has ever produced. Absolutely agree with the sentiments about the awful X-Factor and Britain's Got Talent rubbish; definitely holiday camp tripe. Worlds apart from the majesty of Kennedy.

Yes he is good but how can you compare Vivaldi with popular music?
If it was not for TV shows like you mention, how do you get a chance to get on the music ladder? It is the person 'in the street' that gets on there. Why deny anyone the opportunity.

Nigel Kennedy's not just good, he is great! He was not not privileged but also 'in the street' as you put it. Many classical greats were little known in their lifetimes.

The problem with TV shows is it's not really about high standards of musical ability. It's all about marketing mediocre product and spoon feeding it to a gullible public through huge campaigns to make as much money as possible.

Genuine musicians hone and refine their talent over the years with little regard for fame or celebrity, which they see as a by-product, unlike desperate hopefuls, who see it as the main goal.

Quote,"Genuine musicians hone and refine their talent over the years with little regard for fame or celebrity, which they see as a by-product, unlike desperate hopefuls, who see it as the main goal. "

I could not agree more and that can be said of many other topics.
GREED, GREED, GREED is the main goal.

Well its 'envy'. If anyone put the money up for a show on TV followed by a recording contract...number one at Christmas two years running 2006 and 2007, then arrange a UK tour fully booked .. people would 'despise' in 2008.. rather than say 'good on ya'.
On a local level example .. if anyone does put something on you rarely hear good about it...all you hear is..'oh he is lining his pockets'.
So that is why these days people just dont bother. People can be so nasty.
Anyway.. Mr Potts opera singer ex Carphone Warehouse is known world wide and so is Leona.
I dont think he will need to sell phones again and Leona is well set up lol.

Leona?! You've been brainwashed by trash TV. Production line singers who peddle in fake emotion. As for Potts, he would have realised his ambition eventually, as he is dedicated. Why do you not discover these people for yourself? Is your life culturally lacking that you need to be told what to like and when to like?

See 'Nasty people' proved my point.

No....think you will find it's facts! Number one records have no significance anymore. You only need to sell a few thousand units to reach the top spot these days. Hardly substantial success, that's why they all disappear within a short space of time, only to appear later on, in brain-dead celebrity programs, even more desperate. Look behind what you have been told and sold. Things are not what they seem.

Who would want to buy music from artistes involved in tv shows that are based on public humiliation? What a backward society we live in.

Nigel Kennedy was made famous by TV and his punk appearance. Do you really think he was made famous due to his ability?

It shows how out of touch you are as , you dont get to number 1 by record sales any longer. Most of it is downloads hence the reason why songs are in the charts for much longer.

What you are really saying is that YOU got to know about Nigel Kennedy when he was on television. This was around 1977 when Punk was thriving, which inspired Kennedy and his individualistic attitude; hence his Punk appearance, like countless other young galvanised people at that time.

For those of us who REALLY understand music history, you will find that Kennedy shot to FAME as a child prodigy, under the tutorage of Yehudi Menhuin, then later studying with Dorothy DeLay, as well as being inspired and championed by Stephane Grappelli, long before the mainstream beckoned.

As for educating you on download sales, where do you wish me to begin?

So what your saying then is that nobody had heard of him and he'd made no money untill he approached numerous TV companies, who made him famous.
Is that not what anon said.

Plenty of music aficionado's, myself included, had heard of him, long before ignoramuses like you had to be told he existed. He was famous as a child prodigy and this brought great financial rewards long before mainstream television became involved and allowed dullards like you to play catch up on his career.

It would appear Saturday night 'talent' shows are the limits of your musical knowledge.

Hope this fills a void?

Blimey Roy , you've been on google.

I'd rather be a dullard than listen to him, so he can play the violin. I can play the recorder and the triangle.

No idea who Roy is, there appears to be unhealthy obsession with this person. Not much call for dullards with recorder and triangle, so I will leave you to struggle with your insurmountable ignorance.

I think you may be wrong Roy.

He did not become famous until 1984/85,when his first album came out.Not 1977 as you state.
