Dawlish Town Council's recommendation to Teignbridge District Council is that planning permission be refused Tesco who wish to build a supermarket at Lady's Mile (virtually opposite where Carhaix Way meets Exeter Road).

Why should Sainsbury have been given the green light.
I have seen various refusals for planning applications, be it a major development or a change of use.
The reason given inter alia; that it will deny Dawlish of valuable holiday accomodation.
So Tesco, on that basis, will definitely be a no, no, as it's suggested build is on an established holiday park and Sainsbury is over a mile an a half from the town centre, which does not fit in well with Government guidelines.
It is my understanding that Dawlish has it's fair share of old crock's. Imaginge if you will, an old crock going to the supermarket by bus for instance? I will not go into detail, but will leave you to your own imaginations.
You do not see many getting off the M&S or Tesco free buses, the old crock's remain in Dawlish and get ripped off by the high prices from the likes of the Co-op and Coscutter.

I dont know why Tesco or Sainsburys even bothered..knowing the apathy of Dawlish.

obviously locals will use them. Neither Tesco's or Sainsburys are stupid, they are making sound commercial judgements and would not throw millions away on building something that people will not use. They have built a few of these before, and Dawlish is not unique. They both know what they are doing and what they are doing is trying to get OUR money.

What REALLY amazes me though is the attitude of the Chamber of Commerce. Letting them in without a fight. What's happened there then?

Why don't you ask the Chamber of Trade?

Of course they sound out and trade will be from a 8-10 mile area.. if Dawlish people use it will be a first! .. well until they take a dislike to the staff, see an empty shelf or summit, it wont take them long until they find fault just mark my words.

Got to be better than queing in the Co-Op.

Huge queue at the tills, operator gets up and walks away to announce over the tannoy that the store will be closing in 20 miniutes ,"so please make your way to the checkouts".Brilliant. Time to get a new manager,if you ask me.

Presumably Tescos will now appeal and throw huge amounts of money and lawyers at the problem. Teignbridge will promptly fold up 'can't afford against that sort of money' and voila! The worst possible result for Dawlish - two supermarkets!

Tesco won't do anything until Teignbridge District Council have refused them planning permission. Which in all probability TDC will do.

There is only the need for the one new supermarket. Sainsbury have already been given planning permission. Secretary of State has said its a local decision. Decision has already been made - Sainsbury have already been given planning permission. Therefore no need for Tesco.

I agree though that Tesco won't go away quietly. I don't think for one moment we have seen the last of them - unfortunately!

So....in order to drive home the 'go away' message to Tesco and bolster the nerve of our local councillors, can I suggest that as many of us as possible lodge an objection against Tesco's planning application with Teignbridge District Council and also let our local cllrs know that we don't want a supermarket built at Lady's Mile thank you very much.
