This is from today's Herald Express:
Network Rail has announced there are no 'immediate' plans to re-route the Penzance to London line away from the seaside resorts of Teignmouth and Dawlish.Councillors, including David Cox, expressed their 'relief' at the decision which was heard at a meeting of business representatives in Exeter.
The rail company has ruled out any changes to the route for the next 20 years at least.
Dawlish Mayor Wally Protheroe said: "It's a great relief they have come out and told us this. The cost of putting in a new line would be much greater than the servicing of the present line."
There were fears a new direct inland rail route from Exeter - on the old moorland route which closed in the 1960s - was a priority in ambitious plans to improve the country's rail network. The vision was published in a report by the Association of Train Operating Companies, which plans to alleviate problems at the vulnerable sea wall coastal line through Teignmouth and Dawlish.
At the time, objectors said by-passing the coastal route which serves Teignmouth, Dawlish and Torbay was bad news for tourism and commuters.
Mr Protheroe said: "I don't think anybody would actively work against tourism in the South West.
"The line along the beach is unique and the value of that for tourism is tremendous. Without that towns like Teignmouth and Dawlish would possibly die."
He also said there was no 'financial argument' which backed up building another railway line.
Devon County Council and Teignmouth Town councillor David Cox said: "I welcome the commitment to continuing this route. It is the most expensive piece of railway to maintain, but all the alternative routes would be more expensive.
"It's also my understanding there have been talks about putting measures out to sea, creating an artificial reef, to prevent damage to the sea wall."
The coastal route is often disrupted by stormy weather. There are fears global warming could lead to rising sea levels and more frequent bad weather, increasing disruption to services.
A spokeswoman for Network Rail said: "In the immediate horizon we don't see any risk. It is still a robust section and it is sustainable in the short term. But we need to review what could happen in 20, 50 or 100 years time.
"We need to look at how we maintain the coastal route with the impact of climate change."
She said the meeting was more of a 'discussion' and 'not a definite decision which means all other options are thrown out of the window'.
The spokeswoman said the authority to build a new route lies with central government to provide funding and permission.
"It also has to be supported by main industry stakeholders and take into account key factors, including the socio-economic impact and cost benefits to the existing route.
"At this stage, we are focused on studying the impact of climate change on the coastal route, and have started the process to examine the options to manage it over the next 100 years," she said.
Wally Protheroe defending tourism? No surprise there then, seeing as his empire depends upon it! It's all me me me with that bloke! There are a lot of us in Dawlish who have become wise to his use of our town for his own gain. Protheroe and others, like Hockin, make a lot of money out of the tourism in our town.....which explains their perseverance on the local council. It ensures they get the right outcome when it comes to matters that might upset their applecart's. Despicable parasites, the lot of em!
Roy (and his many aliases) does not like tourists. He would rather have Dawlish sink into the sea than rejuvenate this town.
But would he try to do anything to make things better? No, he'd rather post libellous comments on here (I guess he doesn't realise that his IP address is recorded). It's pitiful.
Why won't he stand up and be counted - see how many votes he gets? My guess is that's because the number of votes he'll get is the square root of Foxtrot Alpha. Maybe though his mum (who he still ives with despite him being in his 50's) might be allowed out to vote for him... No, he's a bone idle keyboard warrior who needs serious help.
I pity him.
Oh dear! Joey shouts too much! If my IP is on record then i will be in touch with the authorities regarding Blackboard Associates....i look forward to that outcome. They think they have control....but i am enjoying this exchange, as these retards have no idea. Bring on the dullards.
All IPS are recorded, each computer has one , through its internet provider. How else do you think the Police know which addresses to raid for terrorism or child sex crimes.Once Majenka are asked for the info, they must give it to the Police, other wise they are closed down.
THREATS BY THOSE WHO ARE FRIGHTENED. Tell me more about internet law you dullard?
I'm enjoying this.....
Looks like the usual Dawlish Town Council bluff to deflect there subterfuge.....
I'm only giving you the facts, their is no need for your insults. If you have a gripe with others then thats your problem. If Dullard is the best you can do then it may explain wht you are launching a one man war.
why cant we chat about the topics posted ? every subject gets highjacked by the rotary and wally haters, dont really know the man, councils and all goverments are corrupt..is it ok NO but lets please discuss better and more interesting topics, its fantastic news that the railway is still going to be used isnt it .....
due to your rudeness i have decided not to bother with this forum anymore,if you hate the man so much do somthing about it,prove what you are saying, either put up or shut up ...goodbye
Boo hoo hoo.... truth hurt you council sycophant.
We will pursue you to your grave. As you are old it won't take long........
Anon you are one mixed up person you need help.
Does this forum have a moderator?
The Railway staying is great news for comuters and school children.
this used to be a great forum I have had my spats with Viadut but that is what it is all about.
What it is not about is some ignorant dim wit being personal and vitriolic.
The condemnaton of the council has now got boring haven't you got anything else to say.
If you want to talk personal, i suggest you look towards the likes of chicken shed/joey deacon. Also, i am wondering whether the real purpose of your posting is to protect Dawlish councillors from condemnation?
Seeing as there is scant opportunity to question councillors about their actions and motives at council meetings or on their stagnant website (and not forgetting the local press, which seems to be bias to the council in the extreme), it is natural that other outlets will be sought.
Town counillors are there to represent us the residents and should be answerable to us. If councillors do not understand this then they should stand down. When they operate in a manner which is duplicitous, then questions will be asked.
When councillors abuse the trust they have been given, it is the duty of those with 'inside' information, to inform as many people as possible. Once this corrupt behaviour has been stamped out then there will be no need for such postings. In the meantime, questions and examples will be raised, invariably, leading to heated responses from those who wish to defend the indefensible.
The reason council and councillor issues permeate on many threads is due to the fact that they affect every aspect of our lives and our town.
This forum should have a moderator for initial postings, most other town websites have a registration of some type. The likes of Anon has brought this forum to rock bottom and so has no credabilty. Says a lot doesnt it for how kids fall out of school.
Wondering....what has kids falling out of school to do with this debate? I agree, it does get heated on here at times....but isn't that the nature of debate and differing opinions?
Do you discredit Anon because their postings attack the council or because you wish to see this website become sanitised in a Spotlight/ Westcountry News type of way?
As for other websites, what would you say to Dawlish Town Council operating a website that encourages debate and openly connects with it's residents?
Using websites only as a PR tool defeats their usage. Comments made on Radio 4's 'Fifty Years before the Masthead' stated that "all journalists, are there, not to defend the status quo, but to probe and prod the establishment, and that includes websites and blogs". Surely you agree with these sentiments?
Those who wish to suppress information invariably have much to hide.
I discredit Anon because of his nasty comments (see above) and asuusme he has just fell out of school, if he has not, there is no hope.
Ahem! It seems to me that this thread just like ever so, ever so, many others has been hijacked by the "are the councillors corrupt/freedom of speech debate".
Extremely worthy as these debates are, can I request that you start a thread of your own and debate the pros and cons there.
Cheers
Isambard K
Point taken Brunel, but i was only responding to a previous poster. As i have already stated, many subjects involve council policy and workings, therefore, leading to postings blurring together at times.
