A solution has been found that good enough for me it's the same with any large engineering project there are problems that have not been anticipated solutions are found and work carries on.

If i was Network Rail i would let the moaners have there way build a direct line from Exeter to Newton Abbot and close the seaward line i bet you any money they would soon change there minds.
Supposedly the work on the sea wall at Dawlish recommences this month. So what happened about the engineers checks saying the underlying sandstone was breaking. I assume they have been told they got it wrong?
Proposals for the section between Holcombe and Teignmouth in Devon are aimed at preventing the line being blocked by falling rocks from cliffs. There needs to be a line that avoids the sea ...its obvious! .. C5 seems the best plan and less expensive.. All the fuse recently about global warming .....you cant beat the sea, or can you?.
