An IoT gateway and a router may seem similar but serve different roles. A router connects devices to the internet, while an IoT gateway connects devices to the cloud and to each other. Gateways also filter, store, and process data locally. They support different device protocols, which routers usually don't. If you're building an IoT system, you need a gateway, not just a router.
