Hair porosity refers to how well your hair absorbs and retains moisture, and it often works hand-in-hand with your hair type. While your curl pattern (straight, wavy, curly, or coily) defines your hair type, porosity helps determine what products and treatments your hair truly needs.

There are three main levels of porosity: low, medium, and high. Low-porosity hair has tightly bound cuticles that resist moisture, often needing lightweight, water-based products and heat to help absorption. Medium-porosity hair typically holds styles well and maintains moisture balance easily. High-porosity hair, which often occurs in curly or chemically treated hair, absorbs moisture quickly but loses it just as fast—requiring rich, hydrating products like creams, oils, and leave-ins to seal in moisture.

Understanding both your hair type and porosity allows you to customize your routine for healthier, shinier, and more manageable hair. It's not just about curl pattern—porosity tells you how your hair behaves!
