How Fast Can a Giraffe Run?

Giraffes may look slow due to their towering height and long legs, but they are surprisingly fast when needed. These gentle giants can reach speeds of up to 35 miles per hour (56 km/h) in short bursts when escaping predators. Over longer distances, they maintain a steady pace of about 10 miles per hour (16 km/h).

How Do Giraffes Run?

Unlike most animals, giraffes use a unique galloping motion where their front and back legs move in unison on each side. This movement, combined with their long strides, allows them to cover significant ground quickly. While they aren't the fastest animals in the wild, their speed and height give them a good chance of escaping predators like lions.
