An attorney plays a critical role in your family law matters. They apply their legal acumen to guide you through complicated procedures and represent your interests in court. The outcome of your case depends on their expertise and competence.
Because your legal representation can make or break your case, it's critical to choose them correctly. But what if your attorney isn't able to achieve your goals? What if there is a communication breakdown or you find they resort to unethical practices? When is it too late to fire your attorney?
Your Rights & Responsibilities as a Client
As a client, you have the right to terminate your attorney's services at any time. You can demand clear communication and access to your file, and raise objections on any fee irregularities. However, you also have the responsibility to provide all facts of your case and pay all fees that you are contractually obligated to.
But know that certain situations may make firing your attorney risky:
· Before a court hearing or deadline
· Your case is close to a verdict
· A settlement agreement has been successfully negotiated or signed
The court may also deny your request to change attorneys if deemed an unnecessary delay to proceedings.
