Fred Holman topped the podium for Great Britain during the first Games hosted in the country - but his life took a sad demise after his success

Fred Holman was born in Dawlish in 1883, the son of a baker and one of 10 children.

Known affectionately to the swimming community as "our Freddie", he showed an exceptional talent for swimming as a child, winning contests from the age of 11.
