It has long been rumoured that Adolf Hitler had a mansion with 1,600 acres of land earmarked in the county as a potential British HQ, had he won the war.
The luxurious mansion boasted a galleried hall, four reception rooms, 10 bed and dressing rooms, four bathrooms and a spacious ballroom with a ceiling decorated with signs of the zodiac.
Brigadier Sir Ralph Rayner brought home Hitler's infamous red telephone at the end of World War Two.
Sir Ralph was more interested in the red telephone near Hitler's bed, noting red was his favourite colour as he accepted the "gift", much to the delight of the Soviet officer.
The family remembered him bringing the phone back to the family homne at Ashcombe near Dawlish. But his children were sworn to secrecy.
