Teignbridge’s new finance chief told councillors of his shock of uncovering £60m worth of debt in the council’s finances.

Speaking at Monday’s annual meeting, he said that the debt is made up of £15.5m the council spent on buying the Market Walk shopping centre in Newton Abbot that will eventually have to be repaid, in addition to a further £45m of borrowing that previous administration committed to.

I remember when the lib dems were in power and Connett was the leader of the council. He blew his trumpet then by telling everyone there will be no increase in council tax while we are in controll. And people bought into it. Well if there had been an annual increase in line with inflation, then there may not have been that debt. Whilst it looks bad on the books, it kept people employed who paid their taxes by having to oversee the projects. Cllr Clatworthy did a similar sort of thing when as a cabinet member of DDC and in charge of finaces, he too blew his trumpet by declaring the same sort of thing, the only difference was, he got the council to close libraries, care homes etc. So they were both blowing their trumpets even if it is out of tune with each other. I wouldn't trust either of them. Remember it was Clatworthy that introduced parking meters in Dawlish, but when I tackled him about it, he denied doing it. Politicions are all the same whether they are at the top (Government) or lower down the political ranks. And don't forget another council leader of DCC (a lib dem) Greenslade, is now on a charge for sexual harrassment as some of you who watch the news was a bit camera shy when he first appeared in court.

Completely agree, no matter who's in charge there all at it. Interesting to see if the lib-dems  tackle local issues e.g potholes, transportation, grass cutting, bin tax  etc  or just bulls*it with holistic chatter, about more housing, hubs for young people, remaining in europe  etc etc.............

Teignbridge Tory leader hits back after £60m debt shock claims made by Lib Dems

The new leader of the Conservative group on Teignbridge District Council has hit out at claims made by the Liberal Democrats that they uncovered £60m worth of debt in the council’s finances.

“Over the last three years a great deal of information was provided to councillors and open discussions took place in the council chamber. While the discussions took place about the redevelopment of Newton Abbot, Teignmouth and Dawlish, there has always been a list of planned, approved and proposed projects and the cost forecast for future ones.

Start of bulls*it season as one political party slags of the previous incumbent. I would assume all this had been previously discussed in financial meetings with the lib-dems involved and this is just point scoring.

When are these parties going to wake up to the fact that this typre of politics are dead and thats why the electroate are fed up with it and want local issues dealt with rather than just inter party  mud slinging. The lib dems are temporaily in charge due to the public being fed up with the current state whereby democratic wishes are  not being carried out. The lib-dems will go the same way if they dont deliver. The old system is gone and unless they wake up to that fact they will be out on the next election.
