It had already been a winter of hellish weather and flooding across the whole of the UK - but that single image of the Dawlish rail line left hanging like washing in the wind, with the sea raging beneath it, is how people across the country will always remember the storms of 2014.
People 60ft up above Riviera Terrace, on the Exeter Road, were getting seaweed thrown against their upstairs windows.
