Anti-pollution campaigners, Surfers Against Sewage, (SAS) sent out real time text alerts through its Safer Seas app warning people that the sea may pose a risk to their health in some areas.

The alerts are based on information gathered by South West Water and the Environment Agency and the amount of polluted water that is spilled using combined sewer overflows (CSO) during heavy rain.


SAS has been campaigning for years to get South West Water to improve its infrastructure
 
Devon has eight Blue Flag beaches and picked up 18 more Seaside Awards in June - with Combe Martin Beach, Challaborough Bay, Croyde Bay, Coryton Cove, Dawlish Town, Teignmouth Town, Ness Cove, Breakwater Beach, Broadsands Beach, Meadfoot Beach, Oddicombe Beach, Maidencombe Beach, Goodrington Beach, Paignton Beach, Preston Sands, Torre Abbey Sands, Ansteys Cove, and Westward Ho! all walking away with silverware.
