Adolf Hitler's telephone, used to bark evil orders that led to the deaths of countless millions, has been sold by an elderly Dawlish resident for nearly £200,000.
The blood red Siemens phone was handed to retired fountain specialist Maj. Ranulf Rayner's father, Ralph, when he was the first British officer to make contact with Soviet forces among the debris of Hitler's bunker in 1945.

I find it distasteful and dare I say immoral for a lone individual to profiteer from the looted item and what it represents. It should have been handed back to Germany or donated to an appropriate charity or museum.

Yes indeed Deedoodle. That would be much more fitting than someone profiteering from it. I'm surprised that soldiers could keep looted spoils.

Soldiers have always collected bits and pieces from the battle field i know i did, to me the phone is just a piece of history.  Mein Kampf is still available should we have a burning on the Lawns demanding ever person who owns a copy burn it.

I guess he had to order some pizza for the bunker.

My gripe is with the sale of loot to profit an individual or family. The person who profited was not even the officer that endured the risks of war. That would be less distasteful. Nonetheless, is it legal for soldiers to collect loot, pass it on to family who then sell it and profit from it? I don't believe it is. As far as I can tell it was forbidden even in 1945. The spoils of war belong to the state. Soldiers that loot were and still are court martialled. Perhaps in 1945 the class system prevailed and connected officers got away with things that less connected soldiers did not. Certainly seems that way. This has nothing to do with copies of Mein Kampf. I've read it, it's poorly written and is full of bluster but making it available helps to expose the nonsense.

Report the seller to the police if it bothers you so much.

It doesn't bother me "so much". I don't lie awake at night thinking about it. I just find the personal profit from a looted relic and what it represents distasteful. I'm not seeking agreement from anyone. It's just my own personal feeling. If others feel differently then I've no problem with it. Many good men, women & children died  fighting their way to that bunker so that we can all freely express our opinions. I'm grateful to them all.

Getting back to the thread heading. Was the phone really sat in Dawlish because I'd be surprised if Dawlish banks (or is it just one bank now?) has a vault open to clients. Usually the landed gentry have an account with the likes of Coutts of London and deposit valuables in safety deposit boxes.

Your ranting on here suggests it does bother you.

I've watched this forum for a long long while and stayed in the shadows equally as long for fear of being denigrated like so many other posters have been. I thought I'd be brave and take a risk. I've not ranted at all. I've simply expressed an opinion and provided the rationale behind it. I will return to the shadows. It's a pity that new posters are not made to feel welcome.

Before I go back to the shadows I'd like to thank Lynne. I do not know her but her posts are always informative and balanced. Me & my friends learn a lot about what is proposed for Dawlish from her. THANK YOU Lynne. Your efforts are not wasted.

I was going to click on the agree button wink but then I thought I'd write a comment instead and say "thank you".

Wow!

I can well understand people staying in the shadows.  I used to only read this forum and not write on it (true!). But then some years back a regular poster at that time (no longer with us I believe)) had a go at me by name because of my trying to save Sandy Lane playing fields from being built on.

So....ironically it was someone denigrating me that got me to start writing on here in the first place!

If I can find it I'll post the link to the thread (and his comment) that started me off.

Just to remind everyone that we have all benifited from the great British Empire looting the world and making us what we are today and whether or not you agree or disagree it's the way things are and have always been.

To get back to where it may have been kept all this time. If in a bank vault then perhaps with the private bankers C. Hoare &Co?

After all isn't there a connection between that bank and Dawlish?

The saga continueth. Whether or not it is the real thing is now being questioned by experts.*

See page two of this week's Gazette.
