There are no guarantees that your next remodeling project will be completed on schedule, or that it will cost what it was supposed to. But there are a few things that you can do to maximize the odds of that happening. Here are seven things you can do to keep your remodel on track and on budget.

  • Leave the tough jobs for the pros. There are some home improvement projects you can do yourself. For instance, you can install baseboard heater covers by simply snapping them onto your baseboard radiators. Painting a room is usually doable for the average person. You shouldn’t attempt to install hardwood flooring or do electrical/plumbing work because it’s only going to cost you more in the long run.

  • Be realistic. A big part of staying on schedule and under budget is simply having a realistic timetable and budget in the first place.

  • Don’t rush the planning phase. The more carefully your plans are drawn up, the more likely things are going to go smoothly.

  • Go according to code. If your project isn’t up to code,

there’s a good chance your project will be delayed by the city. It’s best to start out by getting all the necessary permits.

    •

  • Don’t be overly ambitious. The bigger the planned remodel, the more potential for it to go off the rails. Be reasonable in your planning. Simply move to a new home before you try to transform yours too drastically.

  • Do one thing at a time. Don’t make plans for a phase of construction that rely on the completion of an earlier phase. Take the project one step at a time.

  • Communicate regularly with your general contractor. An open line of communication between you and your general contractor is necessary to keep things on track. The general contractor is the one that coordinates everyone’s schedule so if you’re communicating with him/her regularly, chances are everyone will be on the same page and things will get done according to plan.
