If the proposals go ahead 63 beds will be lost and the number of minor injury units will be reduced from seven to three - leaving just Newton Abbot, Totnes and Dawlish.
It's the same old BS that was spouted when many of the long term mental institutions were disbanded with the trumpets of change spouting 'care in the community'. Many patients were thrown out on the street and put in BnB's by the social services and what happened to those sites that were closed down!
What it actually means is 1) freeing assets to sell off to developers, 2) pushing patients onto family members/relatives to look after in THEIR homes, 3) Washing their hands of responsibility for patients and putting the emphasis on to contracted out nursing care and Gp's 4) reducting NHS staff numbers.
Realising the assets and dumping responsibilities has been the agenda of those in power for many decades. The government does not want to spend on the NHS, but it is quite happy to take the associated taxes paid by the tax payer for the use of it, or not!
