Last week's battering from Storm Frank forced the closure of the town's seafront Esplanade to traffic because the strong winds and sea spray made the stretch of road too treacherous for motorists.
Alongside Dawlish Warren, Exmouth was originally part of a Government Environmental Agency plan to tackle coastal erosion.
One of the options under the new Dawlish plan is to use sand collected at Pole Sands, a sand bank in the area of sea directly off Exmouth, and move it to bolster defences at Dawlish Warren.
