DAWLISH TRIATHLON SUNDAY 20th SEPTEMBER

Letter outlining the road changes for Triathlon 2015

Residents Information

We try hard to run this event with as little impact onto the residents as possible, however in this day and age of Litigation we have to take some serious decisions about safety, that is safety of the competitors, the marshals and also the residents. In the week leading up to the event you will see many signs going up, these are all related to the safety of the event and all are planned and listed in our event plan which we have to get approved by all the relevant authorities such as Police, Highways and the District and County Councils. We try and keep the disruption down to an minimum but we have to put in place some road restrictions, the more athletes on the road means more safety is required.

Starcross. One of the major issues that we have faced over the past two years is Starcross, and the junction with New Road and the A379, for 2015, This year we will be closing the A379 at New Road junction and all side roads onto the A379 will also be closed. All the roads leading onto the A379 will be barriered accordingly to prevent access onto the A379, please find an alternative route. The one way system that we trailled last year seemed to cause more confusion so we will not be implementing that this year.

Dawlish Warren. The Warren Road will be blocked at the Cockwood Bridge end to the junction with Beach Road, we would like all residents to try and avoid using this road if possible. We do know that some people will need to use it for work etc, we cannot stop you going along any closed road but we do try and keep the vehicle traffic to a minimum. Any car wanting access to this road will have to come in at the Beach Road (Warren Copse) junction, again we hope that you will understand and co-operate with us for this one day event..

Powderham & Kenton. The back road behind Powderham Castle will be one way for the duration of our event, that is to say it will only go Exeter to Starcross Direction, there will be a marshal at the Starcross end to ensure that no vehicles go in the wrong way.

Dawlish Warren Golf Club. There will be NO vehicle access under the Viaduct from 0800 hrs until noon or until the last cyclist is back at the Warren, whichever occurs first.

Week Lane. This will be closed to all but essential vehicle traffic for the duration of the event.

All of these road changes have been agreed with Devon County Council Highways Team and the Police.

From all the committee of Dawlish Triathlon we would like to thank you for your support and co-operation in this. This year sees us with over 600 competitors for the Triathlon. We would like to grow the whole event and put this area on the map as a great place to visit and compete in a triathlon. Each year to date has seen this event grow, and as we grow new problems arise. We would hope that you support us in growing, but any comments are accepted, we cannot be in all places all the time, so any feedback and thoughts are welcome. We have put on here our residents letter, should you not have a copy. We do try and letter drop as many houses along the route as possible, although not everyone affected will live on the route.

"problems at strarcross...!!!" -if my memory serves me correctly the police had to be called as the "stewards" refused to let any traffic pass, the queue was way past powderham caslle with buses who included irate passengers who were travelling,to work, people needing he toilet, etc. The road organistionwas   uttrer shambles asthe steard took the view tha this event was more important than orinary motorists journeys . If this cannot be organised properly why should motorists who "pay to use the queens highway" be put out  by road restrictions for this event.

Hence all of the advanced publicity again.

I wonder if Tyneside residents moaned about temporary road closures caused by yesterday's Great North Run? Maybe it's a Dawlish thing?

Its a few hours i dont here moans about road closures on Carnival Day or for the pram race there are faster ways to get to Exeter just use them. The ways to bypass Starcross; Mamhead straight turn right at the cross roads and  through to Kenton or use Telegraph Hill A38 or M5 to Exteter.

1263 the police were already in attendance as part of the event organisation. They attended Starcross at our request as a motorist had driven through the road closure barrier at the marshal narrowly missing him. Over 30 advance signs were put out last year warning people of delays at Starcross. In addition to this frequent radio broadcasts on heart and BBC radio Devon were made advising people that the event was on. If people chose to ignore it an proceed to the point that the road was closed I don't see what else we could have done. Perhaps you have some suggestions? I will gladly take them on board.

This year we have put over 70 advance signs out  along the road from newton abbot to Exeter and will be placing marshals at suitable turn around points advising people to use the a380 as an alternative.

leatash- yes,  that would have gone down well with the bus passengers ...... just hold on a couple of hours on  a bus with no toilet facilities, crying children  or trying to get to work...!!!!!!!  the bus company driver ( who had no knowledge of this event ) had to phone head office to contact police due to the backlog from irate bus passengers and mortorists, you cannotbe serious in comparing  that with the dawish carnival and also the traffic was comimg from exeter, not going to exeter.

davemcmorrow- the obvious answer was that the motorist was so frustrated about the lack of organisaton that made him/her drive through......what do you determine as an acceptable delay in traffic I hour/4 hours/all day?????

A suggestion - the marshal(s)  who were alledgely  in charge at  the point where the runners  come round the corner from the seaside of powderham could easilyhave waved one car through at a time between the spaces of runners This would  have at least satisfied the queue  that the backlog was moving but no, nobody  was going through was the jobsworth attitute.

No sure where you are getting your couple of hours from. The cycle last year lasted 1 hour and 23 minutes however the road was closed for 50 mins at Starcross as the main bulk of cyclists had passed through by this point. This is in the race log. Stagecoach were aware as I had attended 2 meetings with them to discuss the event. They amended both their route and timetable as a result. Same again this year.

Your suggestion regarding runners is confusing there are no runners at this point? They are 4 miles away at Dawlish Warren and Dawlish.

OurSoul, I love nothing more than  a kondersending smart ares. The whole triathlon thing is a pain up the behind and the jobsworth marshalls just love any chance to get off on a bit of 'power'

'Jobsworth Marshals'  or people who give up their spare time and their Sunday lie-ins to help with an event that puts Dawlish on the map?

So when they are pizzing people off for ensuring the safety of the competitors I bet they are grateful for the abuse and aggravation that they receive.

If you don't like the marshals attitude then why not give up some time to do their role properly!!!

Sigh! I didn't change my username from Mrs C by choice. As you and your agreers well know.

I apologise to DOGS. I shouldn't have written that you've changed your username. I should have stated that it was a new username.

Well done to all competitors today. You were all truly inspirational!  The organisers did Dawlish and Dawlish Warren proud (though they need to tell Ian Birdsey to stick to photography and leave the people skills to those who have them).

Well done also to everyone who went out to support the athletes. It was a great turnout!
