The Dawlish rail closure cost Devon £18.6 million in lost holiday bookings. The ban by Education Secretary, Michael Gove, on taking children out of school in term time has wiped £42 million from Devon bookings (as well as caused hardship to local people who work in the industry and can’t now take a family holiday themselves).
