CCTV cameras, which have aided more than 1,500 arrests, could be cut in three south Devon towns.
Newton Abbot, Bovey Tracey and Dawlish could all be hit by the Teignbridge District Council cost-cutting move.
The council said it had to make cuts because it is receiving less money from the government and there is a freeze on council tax.
It has suggested that local businesses take over the system which costs about £40,000 a year.
CCTV cameras have been in the towns since 2004, but in 2011 the police withdrew their funding and the service was reduce to daytime coverage only.

1,500 all caught in Newton Abbot and good for them, Dawlish, the previous Council paid £80.000 + and did not catch anyone, and please dont say they were a deterrent, it just moves them (possible criminals) to another place.
We seem to be having a week of stories coming from Teignbridge pleading poverty and planning any and every cut they can to public services in order to save money. What we havent heard is any cuts being made to their own direct operation. What about reducing the number of councillors on the pay role, or getting rid of a few admin staff or compulsary retirement for the over sixties. In addition they could also stop building useless cycle paths an review contractors costings.
Surely the toilets can be cleaned by those on community service, and other town labour services can be provided directly by the job centre thus making use of the unemployed in exchange fo benifit
This is just getting us ready for a huge hike in council tax next year, after all it has been frozen for two years.
@User 4549, i sent an email to the town clerk and got a very fast response, which is nice. however i think dawlish should continue to have cctv and with an increased number of cameras. oh well we'll have to wait and see.

Hi Paul,
CCTV is still operational, the monitoring is at a control room in Newton Abbot will cease in 2014.
Town Councillors are looking at ways of improving the system here.
