A young marine biology enthusiast from Birmingham claims she saw a Great White off the coast of plymouth. 15 year old Chaynee Hodgetts who was on holiday to the region said she spotted the shark through her binoculars off Baggy Point, near Croyde.

The cold-blooded predators are most often found in warm temperate seas, but the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth says there is a possibility that due to the current weather conditions the shark may have ventured into our waters.

Miss Hodgetts claimed the shark was white on its belly with a grey back, and its fin was black with a ragged back edge. When she spotted it, it was spitting the fish out after biting them and then going back for them. These characterisitics are indicative of a Great White.

Often Great Whites are mistaken for Porbeagle sharks which are native to UK shores and are currently hunting close into shore for mackerel. But if her information is correct, experts say she did indeed see a Great White.

Sightings of Great Whites along the south coast have been reported before, although most have been unconfirmed. The nearest confirmed sighting was 200 miles offshore in the Bay of Biscay, one other was reported in August 1999 off the coast of Cornwall near Padstow by a group of experienced fishermen.

This month Richard Peirce, 55, from Bude in North Cornwall, has teamed up with South African shark expert Craig Ferreira to explore a 70-mile stretch of the North Cornwall coast for evidence of Great Whites.

A young biologist observed a Great White

Off the South Devon coast, yes that's right!

She said "It's no lark,

It's really THAT shark.

I can tell by the size of its bite."

@stephen15, that 15-year-old girl is now a 24-year-old woman!!  Look at the date of the original posting that @jools88 dredged up.

A quick Google search indicates that, of course, there've been no 'credible' sightings of Great White Sharks in Devon waters.
