THE main Teignmouth Co-op store is losing about £25,000 a week as customers flock to the new Sainsbury’s at Dawlish, a councillor has claimed.
Cllr Dave Matthews quoted the figure at a Teignmouth town Council meeting on Tuesday to emphasise the possible threat to traders from the proposed £20 million Morrisons supermarket at Broadmeadow.
Dawlish town centre shopkeepers last week maintained their trade had been badly hit by Sainsbury’s, and Cllr Matthews and colleagues want to ensure the same does not happen at Teignmouth.
And Cllr James McMurray took a swipe at the proposed design of the Morrisons store, describing it as like ‘a tin can’.
He said: ‘They think it is suitable for an industrial estate but if you look at their other stores, they are much more attractive. I am very disappointed with it.’
When Morrison's opens, the shops in Teignmouth town centre won't know what's hit them!
I guess there will be some Section 106 monies from Morrison's being paid to TDC some of which will be spent on funding the new post of Dawlish/Teignmouth Town Centre Manager. Here are the details of the job.

I am not a fan of Sainsburys and have very rarely shopped there until recently. The Co-op are doing thereselves no favours recently Dawlish has rapidly gone downhill, blocked aisles. dirty shelves half empty, miserable staff, fresh produce unappetizing, etc etc
So if I switch to Sainsburys that means I dont use the other shops which Ive always championed doing!!!!
Sorry Nelson. It came up as a new news item for some reason. I didn't see the 2011.
It will be interesting to see how Morrisons affects the existing traffic congestion around that area which can be a nightmare at times.
