THE main Teignmouth Co-op store is losing about £25,000 a week as customers flock to the new Sainsbury’s at Dawlish, a councillor has claimed.
Cllr Dave Matthews quoted the figure at a Teignmouth town Council meeting on Tuesday to emphasise the possible threat to traders from the proposed £20 million Morrisons supermarket at Broadmeadow.
Dawlish town centre shopkeepers last week maintained their trade had been badly hit by Sainsbury’s, and Cllr Matthews and colleagues want to ensure the same does not happen at Teignmouth.
And Cllr James McMurray took a swipe at the proposed design of the Morrisons store, describing it as like ‘a tin can’.
He said: ‘They think it is suitable for an industrial estate but if you look at their other stores, they are much more attractive. I am very disappointed with it.’
