A RED Arrows pilot was hailed a hero yesterday after he steered his stricken jet away from houses moments before the crash that killed him.

Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging encountered difficulties as he took part in a daredevil air display with the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, which he joined in April last year.

Witnesses told how the 33-year-old bravely wrestled with the controls of his aircraft, steering it away from more than a dozen homes.

Locals in the tiny village of Throop in Dorset described yesterday how the plane, which usually carries out carefully orchestrated manoeuvres at 500mph, was barely 50ft above ground as it was guided by the deft former Harrier pilot.
