After years of planning Sainsbury's has confirmed construction work on its multi-million pound store at Shutterton will start soon. It's hoping to be trading by autumn.Nine months later new business units will be available for tenants bringing with them prospect of desirable new jobs. It is thought between the shop and units more than 200 post could be created.
Jim Woolcott, Sainsbury's new store project manager, said "We are looking forward to becoming part of the Dawlish community and to reasure the local community that we will be doing our utmost to construct the store and road improvements with as little disruption to residents as possible." There will be parking for approximately 260 cars, a petrol station and recycling facilities.
Sainsbury's won the right to build a supermarket last year when it beat Tesco in the race to gain permission. Tesco wants to build at Ladys Mile but was turned down by Teignbridge Council. An appeal by Tesco began in October and was due to be continued last month but was postponed due to bad weather. A date for its resumption has yet to be announced.
Has Tesco backed out or will end up with two Supermarkets?
