Devon County Council has bought 100 pay-and-display parking meters at a cost of £290,000, despite being in the process of a public consultation.
A lot of the new meters would replace some old ones. Drivers would be allowed 30 minutes free parking before being charged if the plan is approved. The parking restrictions Devon County Council wants to introduce are in Honiton, Budleigh Salterton, Okehampton, Kingsbridge, Sidmouth, Tavistock and Braunton.
The Council has received about 4,400 objections to the proposals. Cabinet member Stuart Hughes confirmed the meters had been ordered in September and said such meters worked well in Teignmouth, Barnstable and Dawlish.
