Maintaining the climate-change-threatened rail line thtough Dawlish and Teignmouth was being taken seriously by both the rail industry and the goverment M.Ps have been told.
9million pound has been spent in recent years and Network Rail which is responsible for the track was continuing to invest around 500,000pound a year.
Major research was being undertaken to examine the impact of climate change on the railway. Sea levels were being predicted to rise by a third of a metre over the next century.
Two million people had used the line during the past 12 months and this was forcast to grow by a fifth in the coming years.
Transport minister Norman Baker said "The Exeter - Plymouth railway line is of great importance to the south west in general and keeping the line running was a priorty. While a alterative route away from the coast had been suggested, he stressed any solution could not ignore the needs of the south west"
