Desperately needed access for emergency vehicles to a tourist mecca is finally to be improved after years of campaigning.

Vehicles which need to reach Dawlish Warren in a hurry will now be able to use a workmen's railway crossing after a breakthrough in negotiations between local campaigners and Network Rail.

Tall vehicles, such as fire engines, currently cannot reach the Warren because the railway bridge over the access road is too low.

Dawlish mayor Wally Protheroe said: "I'm delighted progress has been made in allowing emergency vehicle access across the line and having procedures put in place to ensure this can be done without danger to the railway."
