Preparations are in full swing for the long-awaited opening of a play area in Dawlish. The hard work and efforts of a group of mothers will be realised tomorrow when the £45,000 Sandy Lane play area opens its gates. In March 2003 the existing play area was worn out, shabby and had come to the end of its life. At the time there was no available funding to purchase new equipment and the future for play in Sandy Lane looked bleak. Thanks to the determination of the mothers Brenda Toye, Catherine Young, Debbie Hitchcock, Emma Hardy and Karen Hannaford, designs were created, funding was secured and the result is a multi-purpose, safe surface play area which has something for everyone. It includes a multi see-saw, a cradle swing and multi-play mover unit designed for the two to six-year-old age group and equipment for children aged between six and 12 years old. Funding was granted from a range of organisations including Sure Start Dawlish and Teignmouth and Teignbridge Council. Tim Collins for Sure Start said: "This is a result of the determination of local parents to ensure that their children have somewhere safe to play."
