Blue flags are for top beaches, and green flags for the best parks. Now Teignbridge Council has decided to try to achieve the kudos that comes with the green flag award, by entering some its open spaces. The Decoy Country Park at Newton Abbot is the first to be put forward because it already meets most of the criteria. But the footpaths, benches and woods need improving, and the executive committee has approved spending £5,700 on the necessary work. Decoy will be entered for the 2006 awards, and two other areas, Courtenay Park in Newton Abbot and The Lawn, Dawlish, the year after, followed by The Den at Teignmouth and Dawlish Warren in 2008. All will need money spending on them to meet the green flag standards. A report to the committee pointed out that the award would highlight the value of the sites, and also recognise the hard work of staff and volunteers to boost morale.
