Very Well said Fluke, I agree, I have lived in Dawlish all my life - not telling you how long..... But long enough to have seen the changes and its only really been the last 5 years or so that the decline has been so noticeable. So sorry to hear that - my heart goes out to you. To lose a pet is like losing a member of the family. Surely, even if it wasn't safe to stop on the main road, they could have pulled in. Some people beggar belief, but I just hope they are the minority.
