Towns like Ivybridge and some villages in the South Hams will form part of a Greater Plymouth Council with Exeter set to take over the running of coastal towns like Exmouth and Dawlish while Torbay will expand in all directions.

MORE of the replacement lighting aimed at brightening up Dawlish at night has been switch on. Now, coloured string lighting has been installed at Tuck’s Plot, the next stage in restoring the town’s traditional decorative lighting.

SEVERAL roads in Teignmouth are expected to become part of another council area under the new controversial Local Government Reorganisation. Cliff Road, Alta Vista and Woodland Avenue properties are in the parish of Dawlish which, under the Government’s new local authority structure, will become part of Exeter Council.

RESIDENTS are being encouraged to meet their local neighbourhood policing team and discuss the issues affecting their communities.

RESIDENTS are being urged to have their say on local policing issues at the latest Police and Communities Together (PACT) meeting in Bishopsteignton. The next PACT meeting, hosted by the Teignmouth and Dawlish Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team, will be held at the Old Commercial Pub on Thursday, 23 July, from 10.30am to 11.30am.

PLANS to transform a long-derelict Dawlish Warren pub into a new aparthotel have been approved by Teignbridge Council. The Welcome Inn, which has stood empty since closing in October 2020, will be demolished to make way for the new development after the authority granted planning permission for the scheme, subject to a number of conditions.

ADDITIONAL fencing has been put in place on Dawlish Brook to protect the Black Swans. Concerns have been raised about the swans, particularly the cygnets which hatched this year, managing to get through the existing lower storm gates.

A fire at a farm in Bishopsteignton damaged a large woodpile and a diesel tank, but was prevented from engulfing a nearby barn containing hay, chickens and machinery. Fire crews from Teignmouth, Dawlish and Newton Abbot were called out to the incident at Humber at 9.21am on Monday (July 12), along with a water bowser from Torquay.

Local lifeboats and coastguard teams were kept busy over the weekend as people took to the water during the sweltering heat. On arrival the crew found that the casualty had already come ashore safely and was in the care of Dawlish Coastguard.

THE famous mini golf animals in Dawlish are moving back in, two by two. The safari-themed seafront attraction has been out of action for a year while work was underway on South West Water’s multi-million pound improvement scheme.

MORE than 100 people have already signed a petition calling for the iconic Dawlish railway viaduct to be improved. Started by county, district and town councillor Rosie Dawson, the change.org petition is urging Network Rail to ‘invest’ in repainting or restoring the town’s seafront landmark which is rusting and deteriorating.

A VEHICLE is believed to have been intentionally set on fire near Dawlish on Monday. Firefighters from Teignmouth Fire Station were called to Aller Hill shortly after 7.30pm on July 6. On arrival, crews found the vehicle well alight on the public highway.

A DOZEN people have been arrested following a weekend police operation targeting dangerous drivers across South Devon. The operation, which took place in late June, saw officers make 19 traffic stops in Torquay, Dawlish, Ivybridge, Totnes, South Brent and Newton Abbot as part of efforts to reduce road casualties.

EMERGENCY services were alerted to a three car collision in Dawlish yesterday. The accident happened at the junction between John Nash Drive and Teignmouth Road. Firefighters from Dawlish, along with police and ambulance, were called to the scene.

TWO members of the public are understood to have stepped in to break up a fight between the black swans in Dawlish. The sole surviving cygnet, who has been named Hope, was caught up in the altercation between father Bluey and another of the adult swans.

POLICE are investigating after a number of cars were driven dangerously around Dawlish Warren car park, narrowly avoiding a former mayor and a member of the public. The incident on Friday happened directly after a meeting held with councillors, residents and traders to discuss ongoing issues with anti-social behaviour and ‘boy racers’.

A PROLIFIC thief who stole items worth more than £1,500 from shops across South Devon, including Dawlish, Newton Abbot and Teignmouth, has been jailed. Ben Dennis Williams, aged 23 of Chestnut Avenue, Exeter, appeared at Exeter Magistrates’ Court on June 23, where he pleaded guilty to 22 counts of shop theft.

ROTARIANS in Dawlish are supporting an urgent call for help by Shelterbox following the devastating earthquake in Venezuela. The international committee of Dawlish Water Rotary Club is continuing its support to the Cornwall-based charity after the earthquake which comes amid other continuing outbreaks of natural and manmade disasters.

GUESTS, staff and supporters at a Teignbridge holiday park have raised more than £14,000 for Rowcroft Hospice. Fund-raising events at Cofton Holidays near Dawlish have included puppuccinos, Bingo Beats and a coast path challenge.
