Almost £20,000 will be spent on access to Dawlish Warren to improve safety and encourage visitors to the seaside resort.

Land owner Teignbridge Council is to carry out the works which will see improvements to the railway tunnel approach, traffic calming and clearer pedestrian routes.

Work will start on Tuesday and is scheduled to be completed by Friday, May 22 in time for the busy Whitsun Bank Holiday.

Kevin Gilding, Teignbridge Council's spokesman for economic development and tourism, said: "Access to the Warren has always been a tricky issue due to the narrow road and low railway bridge.

"We're keen to help make it safer for everybody who visits the popular resort, whether it's in the car or by foot.

"With improved pedestrian routes, clearer signage, new traffic lights and traffic calming measures, the entrance to the Warren will be safer than ever."

He added: "Of course there's no substitute for taking care while driving or walking to the Warren, but we're hoping these measures will encourage more visitors to do just that."

The work will affect two key aspects of the access route to the Warren:

Improvements to the railway tunnel approach including new height restriction signage, clearer pedestrian route and crossing;

Additional traffic calming measures.

These works will be carried out by George Tooley Ltd at a cost of approximately £8,000.

Work will also be carried out by Tenent Traffic Controls Ltd at a cost of approximately £10,500 to replace the current traffic lights.
