@Mcjrpc - yes believe you are correct. that cafe was owned by tdc. holman's won tender to run it. (and see posts above where ownership by tdc is mentioned). Let's hope local government bureaucracy doesn't delay its being rebuilt. If TDC quote lack of funds etc re their being able to rebuild it then perhaps their bluff can be called by donations of money/labour/materials being offered. It's ...
@ALLEMS - i think the posting on this thread from the owners (see above) was posted by roberta who i suspect cut and pasted it from eyes of dawlish. is that right roberta? expect owners of rock pool cafe distraught at the moment but if someone who knows them could ask them if they are up for a rebuild if money/labour/materials etc are donated perhaps their (holman's) response could be put on here ...
Good idea Allems. Just been reading Eyes of Dawlish where suggestions are being made that a fund be set up to help finance a rebuild. Should the owners be sounded out first though to see if they are interested in this happening?
Is this the beach cafe situated by the viaduct on the sea side? (just looked on Eyes of Dawlish - seems it was the one further along at Coryton Cove - The Rock Pool Cafe - that was burnt to the ground).

Well, I don't know about Plymouth 'cheerfully' closing its airport. I imagine the community there would love to have it back and up and running. Guess it wasn't making enough profit for the owners/plane services for it to be a viable proposition and I have read somewhere recently that the owners have said that they don't see a future for it re-opening as an airport. ...
With the announcement that wef end of October this year Flybe will be providing a 3x daily service Exeter Airport/London City Airport I wondered how much this might impact on the travelling time (compared to taking the train) and cost (compared to taking the train) for those wishing to travel to/from around here to/from London? There is a potential for there to be a connecting train service ...
Agree with you that the dangling railway(catenary? right?) is the iconic image of the damage that people both in this country and abroad I suspect have in their minds when they think of Dawlish and the effect the storms had on the railway here. So dangling railway/catenary (aka mangled rails?) being somewhere in the artwork is an absolute must as far as I am concerned (others may have other ...
Love the idea of two long necked swans holding mangled rails in their beaks. Agree that whatever it is that gets done needs to be innovative and specific to Dawlish. Hence the swans and mangled rail idea I think is great. I don't think a run of the mill statue of Brunel would be Dawlish specific and innovative. (Unless of course it was done sort of tongue in cheek. An Anthony Gormley type ...
